We are a diverse and interdisciplinary department that sits right at the heart of ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ as a world-leading science, technology, engineering, medicine and business university. Our mission is to generate and apply human-centred insights for a tech-driven world.
Through our research, teaching and engagement, we seek to advance the social and organisational dimensions of science and technology, helping to realise ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's commitment to "Science for Humanity".
With expertise across the core areas of organisational behaviour, strategy, entrepreneurship and innovation, faculty in the department explore themes such as the social and ethical dimensions of AI, the behavioural foundations of effective communication and responsible leadership, social and sustainable forms of entrepreneurship, digital technology strategy, and the design of innovative organisations. We work across levels, ranging from individual behaviour to firm- and ecosystem-level strategy, and publish in leading journals across management and related disciplines.
This research commitment is directly reflected in our teaching and doctoral education. Faculty in the department teach across most programmes in the Business School in both core and elective modules. Our fully-funded MRes/PhD programme provides two years of rigorous training in theory and research methods, followed by three to four years of supervised research. Across the portfolio of courses we offer, we prepare students to produce evidence-based answers to questions about how organisations and people navigate a rapidly changing, technology-driven world.
Whether AI serves people well depends on the human and organisational choices around it: how developers reason about ethics as they build, how organisations frame the tools they adopt, and how professionals work alongside AI.
New tools, from natural language processing to smartphone sensing, let us observe how people actually communicate and live and informs what brings us together in an increasingly polarized society.
Hype can distort a venture's behaviour and dissolve the trust it depends on, while momentum can be deliberately built to bring ventures and even whole entrepreneurial ecosystem into being.
Innovation is engineered as much as inspired: how organisations select ideas, allocate autonomy, time their feedback and share tasks across products measurably shapes what gets invented.
