Build rigorous research foundations for a successful academic career in business and management
Our fully-funded Doctoral programme begins with a Master’s in Research (Mres). The MRes provides an important foundation in research and methodological theory and skills, preparing you to undertake doctoral work with more clarity and confidence.
Using this solid foundation you will then have the freedom to explore and develop original research that advances your discipline and addresses real-world challenges.
You will have access to a wide range of professional and personal development opportunities, including generous funding to present your research at international seminars and conferences, building a global network for your future career.
Students have up to six years to complete their PhD. It is a full-time programme and is not offered on a part-time or distance learning basis.

The Doctoral programme is structured to take between four to six years full-time. Initially you will complete a Masters in Research (MRes) and subject to you demonstrating satisfactory academic progress, you will then progress to the PhD which takes between three to four years.
The Doctoral programme has one intake each year in September and is spread over four to six years.
It is not usually possible to transfer onto the Doctoral programme as it is unlikely that previous studies would perfectly overlap with the School’s expertise. Please contact the Admissions team to discuss individual cases.
All our Doctoral students complete the Master’s in Research (MRes) as the first stage of their PhD. Not only does the MRes introduce you to core research and methodological theory and skills, it also offers you the opportunity to complete a piece of original research. This early research allows you time to explore and refine your interests so that you begin your PhD with real confidence and clarity about your thesis subject.
It is not possible to enrol on the Doctoral programme on a part-time or distance learning basis. Students must be in attendance throughout the full period of study.
The Doctoral programme is full-time. You are able to undertake part-time work if this does not break your visa and/or scholarship conditions, however the programme offers a living stipend to support students during their studies.
As part of your studies, you will be given a number of opportunities to develop a competitive advantage in your career:
- Our Graduate Teaching Assistant programme supports you to develop teaching skills and you will then perform a wide range of teaching duties to support the School’s Master’s programmes.
- The Early Career Researcher Institute (ECRI) Professional Skills Development programme ensures you acquire fundamental research skills, from presenting and project management to career planning and grant writing.
- You will have the opportunity to build a global professional network. Our research departments run seminars where internal and external academics discuss their latest work. These offer networking opportunities and speakers often lead special topic workshops for research students.
Presenting and sharing your work at seminars and conferences is an extremely important aspect of doctoral studies, helping you to gain valuable feedback on your research and where you can form important connections with fellow academics who specialise in your field. We offer some funding to support you in this.
All Doctoral students are provided with a laptop and relevant software, and have access to a designated workspace which is shared with other PhD students.

You should browse the description of the different research groups in the Business School and the webpages of faculty members. This will give an overview of their research interests and current projects. The MRes research project also gives you an opportunity to pursue potential interests before committing to your PhD thesis.
No, although in your application you should list a member of faculty you have identified as a potential supervisor. You can demonstrate in your statement of purpose how your research interests are aligned to a potential supervisor and the Business School.
