As climate change, nature loss, energy disruption and geopolitical instability reshape markets, organisations need better ways to assess risk, protect value, and finance the transition. The Centre for Climate Finance and Investment (CCFI) brings together expertise in finance, climate science, economics, data analytics, AI and technology to meet that need, producing research that is rigorous, relevant, and built to scale.
Our role
We work where science, markets and technology meet. We connect four areas that do not always work together:
Science and financial markets
Turning climate, nature and environmental data into practical tools for investors, companies, financial institutions and other market participants.
Academic research and market practice
Developing new methods that industry can use and build on, including in insurance innovation and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Technology and finance
Using advanced data analysis and AI to improve how risk is assessed, how future scenarios are modelled, and how investment decisions are made.
Risk and opportunity
Helping organisations handle uncertainty while finding practical routes to resilience, clean energy and sustainable growth.
How we work
Our research brings together finance, climate science, economics, data analysis, AI and technology from the start, because the challenges we face do not fit neatly into one discipline.
We work with academic and industry partners to develop approaches that can be adopted and applied at scale. That means our research does not stop at publication. We develop practical methods for industry, test them in real-world settings, and continuously refine them through close collaboration with the organisations that apply them.
In areas where evidence remains uncertain or incomplete, our research focuses on supporting robust decision-making under uncertainty.
What we work on
Our research covers the challenges that climate change, nature loss, and the shift to cleaner energy create for financial markets and the wider economy:
- Corporate greenhouse gas reporting - advancing the case for disaggregated emissions disclosure by corporations, to improve transparency, comparability and the quality of data available to investors, policy-makers and other stakeholders [link to child page: Corporate Greenhouse Gas Reporting Sign-on Letter].
- Climate and nature risk analytics - improving how risks are identified, measured and reflected in the price of assets and investments.
- Economic security and resilience - developing practical solutions that protect value and maintain performance when climate and market conditions change.
- Clean energy investment and energy security - examining the financing structures and market conditions needed to grow clean energy and resilient infrastructure.
- Adaptation finance - identifying how money can be directed towards protecting economies and communities from climate impacts that are already happening.
- Insurance and risk sharing - designing new instruments and approaches that allow climate and nature risks to be shared and managed more effectively.
Climate-resilient infrastructure - supporting investment in the physical systems that underpin long-term economic stability.
