July-August
Before the programme begins you will be expected to complete online pre-study modules delivered through Canvas, our virtual learning environment (VLE). Foundations in Risk Management and Financial Engineering module
In September you will study one core foundation module made up of four components that introduce the tools of modern finance and enhance your career development skills.
Business Valuation provides the core concepts that support later study in corporate finance and investments, offering an introduction to how firms make investment decisions and how financial securities are valued.
Data Structures and Algorithms with Python introduces algorithm design, data structures and computational problem solving with applications in modern technological innovation. You will study paradigms of algorithm design, computational complexity, and core methods such as search, sorting and shortest paths. The module also provides an introduction to Python, focusing on programming practices and constructs, and debugging.
Financial Statistics provides you with the essential background in probability and statistics for the core and elective modules of the MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering programme.
Markets and Securities firstly provides a broad overview of key financial markets: Stocks, Bonds and Derivatives. Secondly it introduces the concepts of risk and return and how diversification influences risk and return.
You will study six core modules which are taught through lectures and supported by quantitative case studies, allowing you to work on real-world problems faced by financial firms, using extensive data sets and computer programs.
October-March | Compulsory
This module introduces you to more complex econometric techniques which are an essential part of modern advanced empirical research. You will be able to analyse data from any source using a wide variety of techniques.
October-March | Compulsory
This module will cover financial engineering – the use of mathematical and computational methods to make trading, hedging and investment decisions.
October-December | Compulsory
Technical work in financial institutions frequently involves the analysis of data. This core module will ensure you have a solid foundation in statistical inference and econometrics, with particular emphasis on the special features that are prevalent in finance and in the management of financial risks.
October-December | Compulsory
This module will use fundamental tools of economic theory and quantitative techniques, to analyse portfolio choice and asset valuation. It will help you develop an understanding of important investment strategies used for portfolio management by practitioners. In the module we develop fundamentals in fixed income securities, options, forward and futures market. The module includes many analytical examples and exercises and relates the content to the real world trends in financial markets.
October-March | Compulsory
This module covers the identification of categories of risk faced by financial institutions such as credit, market, liquidity, operational and reputational risks.
October-December | Compulsory
Quantitative finance is based on the mathematical analysis of stochastic processes. This module offers a practice-oriented introduction into the body of mathematical theory that is used to analyse the dynamics of asset prices. By the end of the module you will have a solid grounding in the field.
Tailor your learning to your career objectives and interests. You will take either three (if you do the Research Project) or four (if you do the Applied Project) from the following elective modules.
Many of these are shared with students on other Finance Master's programmes, so you can expand your network. All students will be required to take at least one key elective.
Global modules aim to deepen your understanding of a specific subject area within a global context. These modules have an application process and require you to pay additional costs. Module themes and destinations may change on an annual basis and are subject to availability.
This international elective allows you to experience finance in a different economy. It aims to provide the basics that practitioners will require in a wide range of careers both in the public and private sectors. Traditional lectures will be complemented by guest speakers, company visits and experiential learning activities.
This module will give students the opportunity to travel and is designed for individuals interested in careers in finance, investment management or policy institutions. It provides tools to understand how global economic developments and policy actions influence financial markets and asset allocation. The module blends conceptual frameworks with practical examples drawn from recent macro-financial events. Through this module, you will develop the ability to interpret global trends and assess their implications for markets.
In the Summer term, you will develop specialist skills and subject knowledge for your future career. You can pursue an Applied Project together with an additional elective and the optional Extended Work Placement. Alternatively, select the traditional Research Project to work on a subject in more depth.
April-August
The Applied Project is meant to provide real insights into professional financial practice, based on current financial theory and current analytical or computational tools. Projects will be marked in light of this general principle.
Each project will be assessed on its own merit. A good project might offer a fresh insight into an interesting financial problem, or it might provide a useful implementation of an existing analytical tool.
All projects must be informed by current academic finance, with the emphasis on practical application rather than rigorous academic discussion. This is a 3,000 word practically focused, unsupervised report.
The Applied Project can be linked to a summer work placement. Students who secure an approved work placement can be transferred to the work-based Applied Project once approval has been granted. The report requirements are the same as for students not undertaking a work placement; however, the project must be linked in some way to your workplace.
With the Extended Work Placement you will access additional work placement opportunities, including longer summer internships in the UK and worldwide. You will gain deeper work experience credentials and boost your marketability with potential future employers. The focus of the Extended Work Placement is on developing your skills in managing real business tasks, drawing on the knowledge and skills achieved in other modules of the programme.
Employers in Europe often view internships as a critical step in the hiring process, and by participating in longer internships, you can demonstrate your commitment and capabilities, making you a more attractive candidate for future roles. You will also graduate with additional credits, which is particularly valued by employers in Europe.
Please note that additional fees apply for the Extended Work Placement.
May-August
The Research Project provides an opportunity to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills gained on your Master's at an advanced level. This is an original piece of academic financial research undertaken under the supervision of a member of academic faculty.
In scope, the Research Project is equivalent to two electives and the work will be presented in a report of a maximum of 10,000 words. An electronic copy of your project, assuming it 'passes', will be accessible in the university Library. Future students and other users will be able to read it and it will appear under your name.
Stay ahead of the curve with in-demand skills that power tomorrow's careers. This includes:
Hands-on training that turns theory into action - master the tools, data and real-world skills to make smart confident financial decisions. This includes:
From July to August before the programme begins you will complete some online pre-study modules. In September you will study a four-part Foundations in Risk Management and Financial Engineering module. Then in the Autumn and Spring terms you will complete your core modules.
From the Spring term you can tailor the programme to your interests, choosing up to four elective modules. You will also complete your Project during the Spring and Summer terms. You can either pursue an Applied Project together with an additional elective and the optional Extended Work Placement, or a traditional Research Project.

Most MSc programmes require at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or international equivalent). Work experience can add weight to an application. However, this would not replace the academic requirement, no matter how extensive the experience is. The exceptions to this are:
Please refer to the programme’s entry requirements for more detailed information.
The Business School does not offer pre-sessional English courses. We do not accept attendance of a pre-sessional English course as a means of meeting the English language requirement.
We will start to issue CAS numbers from April. The details of your CAS will appear on your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ record after you have met all the conditions of your offer. Please note that you will need to upload a scanned copy of the photo page of your passport and current visa (if you have recently completed a degree in the UK), before your CAS can be issued. Please upload these documents to the ‘Passport/visa’ section of your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account.
Once your CAS is ready, you will receive an email confirming that it has been uploaded onto your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account. If you log into My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ you will be able to find your CAS number and the details that have been included in your CAS.
Please note that we cannot provide you with a CAS if you have outstanding conditions on your offer. Please ensure that you allow enough time to meet your conditions and apply for a visa before the start date of your programme of study.
Your CAS number holds information about the programme you will study and if you have paid any fees. You will not need a formal letter from ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ confirming your offer status for your visa appointment.
For more information about what you will need, see the .
If you need any advice about your visa please contact the International Student Support team. Most information can be found on the International Student Support website.
If you require a visa to study on the programme, you will be initially granted a 12 month student visa upon entry (with an additional four months post study). If you decided to extend the programme to 16 months, you will be eligible to apply for a student visa extension (please note additional costs apply). This would enable you to apply for the Graduate Worker Visa once your degree is confirmed.

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School is pleased to offer significant scholarship funding to our most talented applicants. A range of scholarships are available, including several dedicated schemes for specific programmes, and it is recommended that you apply early to give yourself the best chance of receiving an award.
Please be aware that scholarships may not be awarded following every round (e.g. if scholarships in a particular category have all been awarded or there is an insufficient number of eligible candidates in a given round).
If you are offered an ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School scholarship and are subsequently offered a larger award by us, the larger one would supersede the first award and would not be in addition to it. Scholarships awarded by ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School are in the form of a reduction of the tuition fee. Therefore, if you receive another scholarship that pays the full tuition fee directly to ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, you cannot also receive a scholarship from the Business School.
