Core content

Core modules

You will complete nine core modules in the Autumn and Spring terms that teach you to combine the rigour of analytical thinking with a strategic focus.

Business and the Macroeconomy

September-March

Business planning requires a proper understanding of macroeconomic forces. These forces include not only domestic developments and government policies, but also the impact of international forces in an increasingly interconnected world. The aim of this module is to develop the framework and tools of analysis needed to explain how the level of macroeconomic activity is determined and why macroeconomic conditions change over time.

Quantitative Data Analysis

September-March

This module discusses key empirical issues and methods used for data analysis in applied economics and business. The module will not only discuss the use of these methods and their applications in business but ensure that you properly understand the interpretation of the results and their implications for business decisions. You will also have the opportunity to obtain programming skills in widely used statistical software.

Business Economics

September-March

This module explores the ways in which businesses respond to market incentives and the consequences for market behaviour, the nature and role of competition and the role of innovation. It shows how firms can create and overcome barriers to entry, how advertising can expand the size of their markets and how firms at different stages of the value chain interact. You will also discuss techniques for increasing revenues.

Corporate Finance

September-March

This module develops the theory of finance and the theory of regulation, and further explores how managers can utilise both financial markets and financial instruments to mitigate the risks that they face and the management of the regulatory regimes in which they may find themselves operating.

Corporate Strategy

September-March

Corporate strategy is concerned with a firm’s scope, determining which businesses and activities to include within the boundaries of the firm. The focus is on the challenge of managing and co-ordinating these different businesses and activities to achieve the overall goals of the firm.

Digital Businesses and Marketplaces

September-March

The digital revolution, including the internet, is transforming business and consumer behaviour. This module will consider the economics of digitisation including industry dynamics, the impact on market structure and network effects.

Economics and Strategy for Innovation

September-March

Careful strategic planning is needed in order to ensure that firms successfully negotiate the shifting technological landscapes in which they operate. At the same time, they must drive change themselves through the effective management of innovation. In this module, the strategic management of technological change and of innovation will be considered. A range of strategic and economic tools and frameworks for managing these critical issues will be presented.

Strategy in Global Markets

September-March

This module examines business strategy in global and emerging market contexts, focusing on how firms manage opportunities and risks across diverse economic, institutional and political environments. It explores contemporary strategic frameworks, including non-market challenges, ethical considerations and the broader economic and social implications of globalisation.

Financial Risk, Markets and Instruments

September-March

This module explores how organisations are run and how their financing decisions affect their governance and profitability. When managers are not the owners of a business, they may have incentives to act in ways which are unhelpful for shareholders. Corporate governance describes the systems used to limit these kinds of behaviours. The module also examines the ways in which companies are financed, and show how this can not only affect profitability but also create incentives to engage in activities such as mergers and acquisitions.

Global experiences

Global Business Challenge (Entrepreneurship or Social Impact)

This learning experience is designed for you to work as consultants on a business challenge in an emerging market context. You will apply innovative thinking and problem solving techniques to achieve real commercial, social or economic impact. You will travel to the country where your client is based and deliver the project over an intensive one-week period.

The module will allow you to deploy your interdisciplinary expertise in business strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, marketing, finance and other areas, as well as your consulting skills to analyse the issue at hand, collect evidence and generate recommendations. You will also learn about working in an economic and cultural context that may be unfamiliar to you.

The module is practical, aimed at generating an output that can make a real difference to the local business and economy. You are encouraged to organise yourselves within groups and act independently to set goals, gather evidence, make contacts and generate conclusions and recommendations.

Global Immersion

This optional, one-week trip will consist of a number of visits to different companies across a range of industries, as well as social and cultural activities. You will learn first-hand about the social and cultural dynamics of business in another country and travel with students from other programmes across the Business School, offering excellent networking opportunities.

Applied learning

You will integrate and apply your knowledge in the Corporate Strategy and Economics Simulation and by completing a Consulting Project, Work Placement or Case Study.

If you are planning to undertake doctoral research after the programme, you may also opt to do the Individual Research Report.

Applied learning

Corporate Strategy and Economics Simulation

February-March

The Corporate Strategy and Economics Simulation is designed to bring together the various aspects of the programme and test your capacity to apply the material to a realistic situation.

Consulting Project

June-July

The Consulting Project is a group-based project undertaken for a real client. It gives you the opportunity to apply the programme material to solve a real business problem, gaining valuable consulting experience.

Case Study

April-September

This module is designed to develop your economic and strategic capabilities by applying your acquired theoretical knowledge and analytical and managerial skills towards the development of a 'forensic' analysis of a major global company. You will analyse your chosen corporation from a global macro perspective, apply economic and strategic concepts as the basis for analysis and use detailed secondary research to underpin analysis.

Individual Research Report

April-September

Students wishing to study a doctoral programme after this programme may undertake a research project, with approval from the Academic Director. This constitutes a small piece of research, with an analytical focus, that offers the opportunity for you to revise and integrate what you have learned on the MSc programme so far. It will also allow you to demonstrate that you can apply your theoretical knowledge to a real-world context.

Students who opt for the Individual Research Report only need to choose four electives. You must secure a supervisor to be considered.

Work Placement

July-August

The Work Placement aims to support your development by enabling you to work in a real company for four to six weeks providing you with the opportunity to apply the material of the programme to a challenging business situation in which you are fully immersed. The Work Placement is a fantastic opportunity to build your professional network and gain real workplace insights. You can enhance your future career prospects while supporting your professional development in a sector of interest.

You are responsible for sourcing your own work placement, which needs to be approved in advance by the Academic Director. This should be for one month or longer and can be held at a UK-based or international company or organisation.

Extended Work Placement

The Extended Work Placement enables you to access additional work placement opportunities, including longer summer internships in the UK and worldwide. You will work for four to six months in a company or organisation, gaining deeper work experience credentials and boosting your marketability with potential future employers.

Employers in Europe often view internships as a critical step in the hiring process, and by participating in longer internships, you can demonstrate your commitment and capabilities, making you a more attractive candidate for future roles. You will also graduate with additional credits, which is particularly valued by employers in Europe.

Please note that additional fees apply for the Extended Work Placement.

Admissions and entry requirements FAQs

Why do I need to complete a Quantitative Experience Statement?

All of our programmes are academically rigorous and include a quantitative component. Therefore, all candidates are expected to have a basic level of mathematics before the start of the programme. The Quantitative Experience Statement provides an opportunity to demonstrate this to the selection committee.

In the Quantitative Experience Statement, you need to list up to five of the most quantitative modules or elements of your studies to date. You should detail:

  • the main topics of study (e.g. algebra, probability etc.);
  • the level of study (e.g. high school, undergraduate degree, short course etc.).

This will allow the selection committee to have an understanding of your quantitative experience.

Quantitative experience is a key selection criterion for our more quantitative programmes and this includes MSc Economics & Strategy for Business.

Please check the entry requirements for your programme of interest to ensure your background is sufficiently quantitative. For other programmes, candidates are advised to review the programme content and the pre-study modules. You should check what the numerical content of the programme includes before you apply.

How do I submit my qualifications to be verified?

To submit a verification request, you must first create an online account with Qualification Check. You should use the unique link provided to you as part of your offer conditions.

Once you have completed the two-step registration process, you will have access to your online account. Search for the name of the institution at which you obtained your qualification(s).

Then, follow the steps to enter the required information for submission of a verification request. Your details will then be sent to that institution to be authenticated by the appropriate department. Find out more information at .

What happens after I submit a request for my qualifications to be verified?

Qualification Check’s standard procedure is to contact the primary source of the information. This is the institution at which you studied. Qualification Check will regularly contact the relevant department at the institution to confirm the authenticity of your qualifications.

We understand that applications are urgent and Qualification Check makes every effort to accommodate your needs and expedite processes. Some institutions may take longer than others. But rest assured that Qualification Check is working hard to complete your verification. Find out more information at .

How many programmes can I be considered for each year?

You can apply to be considered for one programme each year. If your application is unsuccessful we will take your areas of interest and eligibility into account when considering you for alternative programmes.

When will my referees be asked to provide a reference?

As part of your application, you will be asked to provide the contact details of two referees. Your referees will be contacted by email once you have completed and submitted your application. The email will contain instructions on how they can submit your reference via our application system.

Please ensure that each reference letter that is submitted has been sent from an academic or professional email address. We cannot accept references sent from personal email addresses, such as Gmail, Hotmail, 126, 163, Sina, QQ or Yahoo.

I’ve received an email confirming that my referees have submitted my references, but this isn’t yet confirmed on my account?

Our electronic application service is provided by an external provider. Therefore, there may be a delay before the receipt of your references is confirmed on your student application account.

If you receive confirmation that your references have been received but this still isn’t confirmed on your account a week after receiving the confirmation, please contact the Recruitment & Admissions team.

Will my decision date be affected by a delay in the approval of my references or missing documentation?

If you submit a complete application by the deadline, you will receive an outcome by the corresponding decision deadline. However, we may be unable to guarantee a decision by the deadline if:

  • there are delays in receiving your references;
  • the documentation required to progress your application is missing.

If the requested information is not received within five working days, we may be unable to guarantee a decision by the round deadline.

If you have received confirmation that your references have been submitted but this is not reflected in your account after a week, please contact the Recruitment & Admissions team.

Will I be invited to interview?

Yes. As part of the selection process, shortlisted candidates for our MSc programmes will be invited to an interview. Interviews are conducted through our video interview platform. You can access it online to record and submit your answers.

The interview process typically takes about 20 minutes and does not require extensive preparation. It aims to supplement your written application and help you convey your suitability for your chosen Master’s by answering questions about your previous experience and future aspirations.

AI guidance:

The purpose of the interview is to get to know more about you. We want to see how you approach problems, your motivations and wider interests.

If we identify malpractice or that answers provided are not genuine, then this may factor negatively into the admissions committee decision.

We have a blog you can read for more advice on how you can use AI responsibly in your application.

When will I receive a decision on my application?

We operate a staged admissions process with several deadlines throughout the year. If you submit your application within an admissions round you can usually expect a decision by the published decision deadline for that round. For more information please see 'Key dates and deadlines' table.

Please keep in mind that during busy times and/or where documents are missing from an application, this may take longer.

Why is my offer subject to checks by Central Admissions?

When an offer is submitted by the Business School, the Central Admissions team needs to make a number of final checks before it can be formally approved. These may include:

  • an additional review of an applicant’s academic background;
  • ensuring the references we have received are valid.

Until you have received confirmation of the official offer via ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s applicant portal, please do not:

  • arrange accommodation;
  • book flights;
  • decline any other offers you may be holding.

The majority of offers are successfully approved by Central Admissions. You will be able to see full details of your offer conditions once your official offer has been confirmed.

I’ve been put on a waiting list, when will I receive a final decision?

Unfortunately, we are unable to confirm when you will receive a decision on your application. We will be in touch via email as soon as there is an update. You do not need to provide any additional information unless you think it will add significant weight to your application. For example, updated transcripts, relevant internships or English language results.

My application has been unsuccessful; can I have some feedback?

Please email your programme Recruitment & Admissions team if you would like feedback on your application. Please note that whilst limited feedback can be provided, the decision of the academic selectors is final and it will not be possible for your application to be reconsidered.

Can I defer my place to next year?

If you receive an offer you can request to defer it to the following year. Requests will be considered until 23 June 2027.

Requests submitted after 23 June will only be approved in exceptional circumstances.

Please note deferrals are considered on a case-by-case basis and in order to be considered for a deferral you will need to pay the tuition fees deposit.

If you already paid your deposit for the current admissions cycle, this will be carried over to your new offer. However, our tuition fees do increase each year and you will be required to make up the difference between the old deposit and the new deposit amount.

Please note that you can only defer once.

Can you advise me on my eligibility?

We are unable to assess your eligibility before you apply. The academic selection committee needs to review a full application before any decision can be made.

Please check the specific entry requirements of the programme you are interested in studying. Please also check our international entry requirements. If you feel you meet our entry requirements you can apply online.

In addition to the guidance on our website, we hold regular information sessions online and on campus throughout the year. Here, we would be happy to discuss your suitability in more detail.

What are the international entry requirements?

We accept a wide range of international qualifications for postgraduate study at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.

We've provided general guidance in the country and region index so you can understand how qualifications awarded by public institutions overseas may satisfy our minimum academic admission requirements.

We review our requirements annually. Updates usually happen in September each year before the next academic year of entry.

If your country or region is not listed, please contact the relevant Admissions team for further information.

I don't meet the academic entry requirement but I have some work experience, will I be considered?

Most MSc programmes require at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or international equivalent). Work experience can add weight to an application. However, this would not replace the academic requirement, no matter how extensive the experience is. The exceptions to this are:

Please refer to the programme’s entry requirements for more detailed information.

Does the Business School offer pre-sessional English?

The Business School does not offer pre-sessional English courses. We do not accept attendance of a pre-sessional English course as a means of meeting the English language requirement.

I require a visa to study in the UK, when will I receive my CAS?

We will start to issue CAS numbers from April. The details of your CAS will appear on your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ record after you have met all the conditions of your offer. Please note that you will need to upload a scanned copy of the photo page of your passport and current visa (if you have recently completed a degree in the UK), before your CAS can be issued. Please upload these documents to the ‘Passport/visa’ section of your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account.

Once your CAS is ready, you will receive an email confirming that it has been uploaded onto your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account. If you log into My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ you will be able to find your CAS number and the details that have been included in your CAS.

Please note that we cannot provide you with a CAS if you have outstanding conditions on your offer. Please ensure that you allow enough time to meet your conditions and apply for a visa before the start date of your programme of study.

What do I need for my visa appointment?

Your CAS number holds information about the programme you will study and if you have paid any fees. You will not need a formal letter from ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ confirming your offer status for your visa appointment.

For more information about what you will need, see the .

If you need any advice about your visa please contact the International Student Support team. Most information can be found on the International Student Support website.

How do I extend my visa to undertake an Extended Work Placement?

If you require a visa to study on the programme, you will be initially granted a 12 month student visa upon entry (with an additional four months post study). If you decided to extend the programme to 16 months, you will be eligible to apply for a student visa extension (please note additional costs apply). This would enable you to apply for the Graduate Worker Visa once your degree is confirmed.

What scholarships am I eligible to apply for and where can I find out further information about these?

The Business School offers a variety of different scholarships, each with unique eligibility criteria.

All candidates who submit an MSc application and receive an offer for one of our programmes will automatically be considered for scholarship(s) relevant to their programme, providing the award does not have additional criteria, such as a written assessment. • the amount of fees which will be paid by your sponsor (please report in GBP)
  • the address to which the invoice should be sent
