Core content

Core modules

You will undertake eight core modules designed to equip you with a broad understanding of key concepts and theories.

Bridging Knowledge and Practice: Climate and Business Perspectives

This module brings together guest speakers from diverse industries, providing insights into trends, challenges and opportunities. You will  develop key communication skills to convey complex concepts effectively. The module integrates learnings from all parts of the programme and tests your comprehension and ability to apply knowledge, preparing you to address real-world challenges in the evolving climate economy.

Business Economics, Climate Change and the Environment

The aim of this module is to introduce the economic concepts needed to understand climate change and environmental policy, with a particular focus on their relevance for business. You’ll explore why climate change is an economic problem and examine key policy tools, including carbon pricing, regulation, subsidies and international cooperation. You’ll also consider wider debates around climate damages, green growth, industrial policy, trade, the just transition and adaptation.

Carbon Accounting and Reporting

This module will show how accounting is necessary for both organisational finance and management. You’ll also learn to quantify environmental impacts and carbon emissions. It will address the technical aspects of management accounting practices. This supports the effective definition and delivery of strategic objectives.

Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change

Adaptation is a pervasive theme of the climate change discourse at every level of governance. You will learn about the evolution of adaptation concepts, adaptation opportunities and responses, the limits to adaptation, maladaptation and disaster risk management. You will also learn about tangible action in terms of engineering and technology, ecosystem-based, institutional or social interventions.

Mitigating Climate Change

Utilising the world-class expertise from across ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, you will learn about climate change mitigation strategies. We will examine technological strategies and national climate change mitigation plans from major greenhouse gas emitters. You will gain the knowledge and tools to develop effective, cost-efficient strategies for mitigating climate change at global, sectoral and local levels.

Principles of Finance

The module will give you a solid foundation in financial theory. You’ll also be introduced to the main issues related to financial decision-making and investment practice. The module will include the basic principles of corporate finance, financial markets and the interaction between the two.

Quantitative Methods

Mathematics and statistics are integral to business, accounting, economics and climate change science. You will study the principles and techniques, developing a structural analytical framework that will enable you to organise and interpret business data.

The Science of Climate Change

You will come away from this module understanding the scientific basis of, and the need for action on, climate change. You will learn how numerical modelling is used to provide quantitative scenarios for future environmental change. Using a combination of data analysis and modelling, this module covers the greenhouse effect, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, historical climate change and natural versus anthropogenic climate variability.

Personalisation

Elective modules in management and finance allow you to personalise your programme based on your career interests. You will select seven elective modules (subject to availability), with the option to specialise in either management or finance. Regardless of the specialisation, you will take two electives from the other pathway to ensure a well-rounded education.

Alternatively you can choose a more balanced route, taking three modules from one pathway and four from the other. When you graduate, all students receive the same MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance award title.

Personalisation

Finance pathway

These electives equip you with cutting-edge tools, real-world insights and global perspectives to navigate climate finance and risks, clean tech investing, ESG activism and innovative finance—preparing you to lead in a rapidly transforming financial landscape.

Climate Finance: A Global Overview

This module starts by providing you with an overall review and estimates of global climate finance requirements, based on a range of sources going from global estimates to national, sectoral and project levels. You will then identify different types of climate mitigation and adaptation projects and describe the range of financing instruments including both traditional and innovative instruments for large and small projects. The module includes a review of financing sources, both private and public, the project cycle and complementary activities to financing, such as policy advice and technical assistance.

Finance in CleanTech

The purpose of this module is to apply the concepts you have learned in your Corporate Finance module to the real-world context of climate investing by sophisticated financial investors. We will focus on clean energy investments as a way of grounding ourselves in the basic principles but seek to consider other profitable ways for the private sector to undertake climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Financial Markets & Climate Change

This module will provide you with a basic understanding of the main financial market issues relating to climate change and cover the latest financial market developments. You will cover climate related financial risk, sustainable asset management, climate change risk for financial institutions, and central bank supervision. You will examine physical, transition and legal risks that financial institutions are increasingly exposed to. Some of the topics covered include the pricing of climate change risk, the role of climate risk disclosures, climate stress tests, net-zero aligned portfolio construction, financial regulation, monetary policy, government regulation and technical change in renewable energy.

Risk Management & Climate Change

In this module you will be introduced to the concepts of risk and risk management in general in relation to environmental and climate change. You will discuss why risk is costly to firms, post-loss financing tools and risk management tools such as hedging, insurance and self-insurance. Climate risk will be covered as cutting across different categories faced by corporations, such as market, credit, operational and reputational risks. The module will place a particular emphasis on the design and use of climate risk scenarios that can reveal a firm's vulnerabilities or gauge capital requirements in the case of regulatory stress tests. The last part of the module will discuss financial innovation and its role in managing climatic risks.

Shareholder Activism & Corporate Responsibility

The objective of the module is threefold. First, to give you an introduction to current practice. The main issues in environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) and corporate responsibility that are discussed among policymakers, corporations, investors and scholars from law, finance and economics will be covered. The topics will be approached from an international comparative perspective. Second, to familiarise you with analytical tools used by ESG analysts. Third, to illustrate how practical ESG challenges, like crises, mismanagement or activist shareholder interventions can be addressed and resolved.

Management pathway

These electives empower you to shape strategy, influence policy, drive sustainable innovation and consumption, and rethink marketing for a low-carbon world—equipping you to lead the transition towards a net-zero, resilient and purpose-driven economy.

Climate Policy & Governance

This module offers an opportunity to explore the role of governance in driving climate change action and business development at local, national and global scales. You will examine how governance supports mitigation and adaptation, consider the role of key stakeholders in shaping policy making, and analyse why governance will be an important component of the future net-zero, resilient world. The module will enable you to develop a deeper appreciation for policy challenges to delivering climate action and for the role of policy in shaping business decisions and outcomes.

Energy Business & Strategy

The aim of the module is to explore how energy companies are responding to the need to provide secure, affordable, supplies of energy while minimising its environmental and social impact. It will emphasise the role of technology and behaviour in expanding the options available to us, and the way in which technological features of different energy sectors affect their business models and economic performance.

Innovation for Climate Change & Cleantech Solutions

It is clear that society needs innovators who will develop the next generation of smart businesses that achieve success whilst minimising waste, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In this module, you will work in teams to develop an innovative cleantech business proposition. These are defined as innovations of products and services that avoid or diminish the adverse environmental effects of human activity. You will be guided through the stages that take a nascent idea and an untested team to the point where the team has a well-formed cleantech idea that can be pitched to an investor or sponsor.

Sustainable Management & Strategy

This module will address the topic of sustainability from a strategic perspective, with a particular emphasis on decision-making and trade-offs. Topics covered include: the drivers of sustainability; the business case for sustainability; sustainability and competitive advantage; integrating sustainability into the supply chain; sustainable investing and sustainability reporting.

Sustainable Marketing & Consumption

Global shifts in consumption patterns are urgently needed to tackle climate change and environmental degradation. This is the challenge the Sustainable Marketing & Consumption module attempts to address: how to balance short- and long-term goals, financial profit and environmental footprint, customers' and societal needs. The module will delve into the obstacles that prevent marketers and consumers from acting in an environmentally sustainable manner, what companies, governments, and consumers can do to overcome them, and how to systematically test the effectiveness of sustainable marketing tactics and strategies.

Applied learning

In the summer term, you can choose between a group consulting project, work placement or individual research project.

Applied learning

Consulting project

Summer

The consulting project will be delivered for a real client. You will use the material from the programme to address a specific problem and deliver it as part of a team.

You can take the opportunity to complete your project abroad. This will allow you to experience the corporate environment in a country other than the UK. The Business School and the Grantham Institute leverage their wide network of organisations to help students secure projects.

Individual Research Project

The Individual Research Project (IRP) constitutes a piece of research conducted by you under the supervision of a faculty member (supervisor) on the MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance programme. The project is usually embedded in the proposers larger research agenda. The supervisor offers an IRP opportunity (i.e. general research questions, tasks and required methodological skills) and you will have the opportunity to apply for the IRP "position". You can also source your own IRP, though this will need to be approved.

Much like the consulting projects and work placements, IRPs run from June to August, but can vary slightly depending on mutual agreement between you and your supervisor. At the end, you will submit a project report for final assessment. IRPs are offered to those individuals who desire to strengthen their substantive, theoretical, methodological and empirical training in an area of interest. A detailed booklet on the IRP, including information about deadlines will be issued during the course.

Work Placement

Summer

The Work Placement gives you the opportunity to apply the material of the programme to an immersive and challenging business situation. It could be carried out with an international or national organisation with a business focus.

You can take the opportunity to complete your Work Placement abroad. This would allow you to experience the corporate environment in a country other than the UK. The Business School and the Grantham Institute leverage their wide network of organisations to help students secure placements.

Extended Work Placement

With the Extended Work Placement you will access additional work placement opportunities. This includes longer summer internships in the UK and worldwide. You will gain deeper work experience credentials and boost your marketability with potential future employers.

Employers in Europe often view internships as a critical step in the hiring process, and by participating in longer internships, you can demonstrate your commitment and capabilities, making you a more attractive candidate for future roles. You will also graduate with additional credits, which is particularly valued by employers in Europe.

Please note that additional fees apply for the Extended Work Placement.

You should have a clear vision for how you can help shape a positive future for our planet, putting what you learn from our world-class faculty into practice.

Alongside academic achievements, we’re looking for people who have a passion for climate and sustainability. Use your personal statement to tell us about:

  • Your hobbies and interests: this could include being an active member of a society at university, or spending time volunteering or raising money for a cause that means a lot to you.
  • International experience: this could be through studying abroad, volunteering or travel.
  • Additional languages: for many of you, English is already an additional language and it isn't uncommon for our students to be fluent in four or five languages, which can increase your employability.
  • Positive impact or achievement: this could be through representing a region or country at sports, mentoring young people or making changes to your university experiences through student leadership.
  • Career goals after graduating: you will be entering a highly competitive recruitment market and we want to see that you have already thought about the skills and experience you are going to need to succeed in your target organisation and role.
Application process

We have provided a step-by-step walkthrough on how to apply for the MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering programme, with comprehensive instructions to ensure you complete your application successfully and meet all the essential admissions requirements.

Step one: Start your application online

Visit the and create an account by completing your personal details. Our online application form gives you the flexibility to save your progress and complete your application in your own time.

Step two: Submit supporting documents

You will need the following:

  • current CV (view for guidance);
  • personal statement questions (see blog for tips on how to write a personal statement);
  • complete degree transcripts with English translation if necessary (view international entry requirements);
  • contact details of two academic referees or one academic and one professional referee including their company/business email address. We recommend that one should be your current line manager or academic supervisor;
  • career planning questions, a quantitative experience statement and programming/computer software experience (if applicable);
  • English language scores if required (i.e. TOEFL, IELTS etc.);
  • GMAT/GRE is not a mandatory requirement, however, it can enhance the strength of your application.

You can also indicate other areas of finance you are interested in. If we do not make you an offer for your selected programme, we will automatically consider you for alternative Finance programmes.

Step three: Complete your application

Once you have submitted your supporting documents you can complete your application with the £125 application processing fee. Once your application has been submitted your referees will receive a notification to provide your reference.

The Business School has a zero-tolerance policy to fraudulent applications, and we will report findings to the Home Office.

Step four: Interview and admissions decision
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete an interview using our online video platform. This is the best opportunity for you to demonstrate your passion and drive, and why you want to study a Master's at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.
  • AI guidance: The purpose of the interview is to get to know more about you. We want to see how you approach problems, your motivations and wider interests. If we identify malpractice or answers provided are not genuine then this may factor negatively in the admissions committee decision. Read our blog for more advice on how you can use AI responsibly in your application.
  • Application decisions will be communicated by the corresponding decision date for the round in which you applied. Please refer to our key dates and deadlines for more information on timeframes.
Step five: submit outstanding documents and pay your deposit

After receiving your offer, you will need to submit documents to satisfy your offer conditions. Admissions and entry requirements FAQs

Why do I need to complete a Quantitative Experience Statement?

All of our programmes are academically rigorous and include a quantitative component. Therefore, all candidates are expected to have a basic level of mathematics before the start of the programme. The Quantitative Experience Statement provides an opportunity to demonstrate this to the selection committee.

In the Quantitative Experience Statement, you need to list up to five of the most quantitative modules or elements of your studies to date. You should detail:

  • the main topics of study (e.g. algebra, probability etc.);
  • the level of study (e.g. high school, undergraduate degree, short course etc.).

This will allow the selection committee to have an understanding of your quantitative experience.

Please check the entry requirements for your programme of interest to ensure your background is sufficiently quantitative. For other programmes, candidates are advised to review the programme content and the pre-study modules. You should check what the numerical content of the programme includes before you apply.

How do I submit my qualifications to be verified?

To submit a verification request, you must first create an online account with Qualification Check. You should use the unique link provided to you as part of your offer conditions.

Once you have completed the two-step registration process, you will have access to your online account. Search for the name of the institution at which you obtained your qualification(s).

Then, follow the steps to enter the required information for submission of a verification request. Your details will then be sent to that institution to be authenticated by the appropriate department. Find out more information at .

What happens after I submit a request for my qualifications to be verified?

Qualification Check’s standard procedure is to contact the primary source of the information. This is the institution at which you studied. Qualification Check will regularly contact the relevant department at the institution to confirm the authenticity of your qualifications.

We understand that applications are urgent and Qualification Check makes every effort to accommodate your needs and expedite processes. Some institutions may take longer than others. But rest assured that Qualification Check is working hard to complete your verification. Find out more information at .

How many programmes can I be considered for each year?

You can apply to be considered for one programme each year. If your application is unsuccessful we will take your areas of interest and eligibility into account when considering you for alternative programmes.

When will my referees be asked to provide a reference?

As part of your application, you will be asked to provide the contact details of two referees. Your referees will be contacted by email once you have completed and submitted your application. The email will contain instructions on how they can submit your reference via our application system.

Please ensure that each reference letter that is submitted has been sent from an academic or professional email address. We cannot accept references sent from personal email addresses, such as Gmail, Hotmail, 126, 163, Sina, QQ or Yahoo.

I’ve received an email confirming that my referees have submitted my references, but this isn’t yet confirmed on my account?

Our electronic application service is provided by an external provider. Therefore, there may be a delay before the receipt of your references is confirmed on your student application account.

If you receive confirmation that your references have been received but this still isn’t confirmed on your account a week after receiving the confirmation, please contact the Recruitment & Admissions team.

Will my decision date be affected by a delay in the approval of my references or missing documentation?

If you submit a complete application by the deadline, you will receive an outcome by the corresponding decision deadline. However, we may be unable to guarantee a decision by the deadline if:

  • there are delays in receiving your references;
  • the documentation required to progress your application is missing.

If the requested information is not received within five working days, we may be unable to guarantee a decision by the round deadline.

If you have received confirmation that your references have been submitted but this is not reflected in your account after a week, please contact the Recruitment & Admissions team.

Will I be invited to interview?

Yes. As part of the selection process, shortlisted candidates for our MSc programmes will be invited to an interview. Interviews are conducted through our video interview platform. You can access it online to record and submit your answers.

The interview process typically takes about 20 minutes and does not require extensive preparation. It aims to supplement your written application and help you convey your suitability for your chosen Master’s by answering questions about your previous experience and future aspirations.

AI guidance:

The purpose of the interview is to get to know more about you. We want to see how you approach problems, your motivations and wider interests.

If we identify malpractice or that answers provided are not genuine, then this may factor negatively into the admissions committee decision.

We have a blog you can read for more advice on how you can use AI responsibly in your application.

When will I receive a decision on my application?

We operate a staged admissions process with several deadlines throughout the year. If you submit your application within an admissions round you can usually expect a decision by the published decision deadline for that round. For more information please see 'Key dates and deadlines' table.

Please keep in mind that during busy times and/or where documents are missing from an application, this may take longer.

Why is my offer subject to checks by Central Admissions?

When an offer is submitted by the Business School, the Central Admissions team needs to make a number of final checks before it can be formally approved. These may include:

  • an additional review of an applicant’s academic background;
  • ensuring the references we have received are valid.

Until you have received confirmation of the official offer via ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s applicant portal, please do not:

  • arrange accommodation;
  • book flights;
  • decline any other offers you may be holding.

The majority of offers are successfully approved by Central Admissions. You will be able to see full details of your offer conditions once your official offer has been confirmed.

I’ve been put on a waiting list, when will I receive a final decision?

Unfortunately, we are unable to confirm when you will receive a decision on your application. We will be in touch via email as soon as there is an update. You do not need to provide any additional information unless you think it will add significant weight to your application. For example, updated transcripts, relevant internships or English language results.

My application has been unsuccessful; can I have some feedback?

Please email your programme Recruitment & Admissions team if you would like feedback on your application. Please note that whilst limited feedback can be provided, the decision of the academic selectors is final and it will not be possible for your application to be reconsidered.

Can I defer my place to next year?

If you receive an offer you can request to defer it to the following year. Requests will be considered until 23 June 2027.

Requests submitted after 23 June will only be approved in exceptional circumstances.

Please note deferrals are considered on a case-by-case basis and in order to be considered for a deferral you will need to pay the tuition fees deposit.

If you already paid your deposit for the current admissions cycle, this will be carried over to your new offer. However, our tuition fees increase each year and you will be required to make up the difference between the old deposit and the new deposit amount.

Please note that you can only defer once.

Can you advise me on my eligibility?

We are unable to assess your eligibility before you apply. The academic selection committee needs to review a full application before any decision can be made.

Please check the specific entry requirements of the programme you are interested in studying. Please also check our international entry requirements. If you feel you meet our entry requirements you can apply online.

In addition to the guidance on our website, we hold regular information sessions online and on campus throughout the year. Here, we would be happy to discuss your suitability in more detail.

What are the international entry requirements?

We accept a wide range of international qualifications for postgraduate study at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ.

We've provided general guidance in the country and region index so you can understand how qualifications awarded by public institutions overseas may satisfy our minimum academic admission requirements.

We review our requirements annually. Updates usually happen in September each year before the next academic year of entry.

If your country or region is not listed, please contact the relevant Recruitment & Admissions team for further information.

I don't meet the academic entry requirement but I have some work experience, will I be considered?

Most MSc programmes require at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (or international equivalent). Work experience can add weight to an application. However, this would not replace the academic requirement, no matter how extensive the experience is. The exceptions to this are:

Please refer to the programme’s entry requirements for more detailed information.

Does the Business School offer pre-sessional English?

The Business School does not offer pre-sessional English courses. We do not accept attendance of a pre-sessional English course as a means of meeting the English language requirement.

I require a visa to study in the UK, when will I receive my CAS?

We will start to issue CAS numbers from April. The details of your CAS will appear on your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ record after you have met all the conditions of your offer. Please note that you will need to upload a scanned copy of the photo page of your passport and current visa (if you have recently completed a degree in the UK), before your CAS can be issued. Please upload these documents to the ‘Passport/visa’ section of your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account.

Once your CAS is ready, you will receive an email confirming that it has been uploaded onto your My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account. If you log into My ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ you will be able to find your CAS number and the details that have been included in your CAS.

Please note that we cannot provide you with a CAS if you have outstanding conditions on your offer. Please ensure that you allow enough time to meet your conditions and apply for a visa before the start date of your programme of study.

What do I need for my visa appointment?

Your CAS number holds information about the programme you will study and if you have paid any fees. You will not need a formal letter from ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ confirming your offer status for your visa appointment.

For more information about what you will need, see the .

If you need any advice about your visa please contact the International Student Support team. Most information can be found on the International Student Support website.

How do I extend my visa to undertake an Extended Work Placement?

If you require a visa to study on the programme, you will be initially granted a 12 month student visa upon entry (with an additional four months post study). If you decided to extend the programme to 16 months, you will be eligible to apply for a student visa extension (please note additional costs apply). This would enable you to apply for the Graduate Worker Visa once your degree is confirmed.
