Business School Rewards the Curious, Not Just the Busy

By Francesca Hoare

Business school offers more than a qualification. It builds confidence, skills, relationships and perspectives that open doors and shape careers long after graduation.

It Goes Faster Than You Think

One thing that catches many students off guard is how quickly the calendar fills up. Between core modules, electives, recruiting, clubs, and social events, there's a lot competing for attention — and it's easy to end up busy without ever feeling like the time is being used well.

The good news is that there are many ways to make an impact. Some of it is academic: choosing electives that stretch students, taking on consulting projects, global trips, or exchange programmes. And some of it is just showing up for the community — clubs, mentoring, informal coffee chats. In short: plenty of opportunity exists at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School.

And yes, it can feel overwhelming trying to do it all at once, and that's completely normal. A few things tend to help:

  • Pick a few things carefully: Nobody can do everything well. Choosing two or three commitments worth caring about beats spreading yourself too thinly across,
  • Treat classmates as a resource, not just company: Some of the best learning happens outside class — in study groups, over lunch, in the corridor after a lecture. Asking questions and sharing knowledge both count as networking.
  • Say yes before feeling ready: Leadership roles, case competitions, guest speaker panels — most people feel underqualified for these until they've done one. The students who get the most out of business school are usually the ones who signed up anyway.

These habits tend to turn the year into something being actively shaped, rather than a checklist to get through. At its core, making the most of business school isn't about collecting credentials or filling every slot in the calendar. It's about being intentional with a short, unusually rich window of time.

Whether it's through a club, a professor's office hours, or a late-night conversation with a classmate, it's rarely obvious in advance which experience will end up mattering most. Sometimes it's a job. Sometimes it's a new way of thinking. And sometimes, it's simply a friendship that makes the whole thing worth it.

The takeaway: don't wait to feel ready before getting involved — that feeling rarely comes first
