Using generative AI in your studies
Generative AI tools can help you brainstorm, summarise readings, draft notes and practice explanations. Used well and honestly, gen-AI tools can act as a genuine study aid - but there are a few ground rules you should keep in mind when using gen-AI tools in your studies.
- Only use gen-AI where your course/programme allows it. Check your course/programme guidelines before using gen-AI in any assessed work.
- Acknowledge how you used gen-AI. When preparing assessed coursework in a course/programme for which the use of gen-AI is permitted. Keep a record of the tools/versions you have used, how you have prompted them, and how they have helped you.
- Check the output. Gen-AI can be confidently wrong ('hallucinations'). Verify all the facts provided by the gen-AI and only cite proper and existing sources. You are responsible for all aspects of your coursework submissions.
- Protect your data. ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ is providing all students with gen-AI tools that have been approved by our ICT Department, and ensure that data uploaded will not be shared with external companies to train their Large Language Models (LLMs). For this reason, students are expected to use ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ-provided gen-AI tools in their studies so that they remain compliant with Intellectual Property, Copyright, and Data Protection regulations and policies.
