Ed Lessons and Workspaces accessibility statement
This accessibility statement covers Ed Lessons and Workspaces, accessed via edstem.org. It will be updated to cover the LTI integration in due course.
We want as many people as possible to be able to use the coding platform. For example, that means you should be able to:
- Use responsive design (the display of all content is optimised for all screen sizes).
- Use skip to main content links.
- Rely on colour contrasts.
- Use content types and features that have been optimised to meet accessibility standards, such as accordions, slideshows/carousels, tables and tabs.
- Navigate the platform by keyboard.
- Rely on alt text applied to links and visuals.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible is the website
Ed Lessons and Workspaces aims to conform to WCAG 2.2 AA and is partially compliant, with some known gaps set out below. All forms are labelled using alt text, and checkboxes and text boxes are clearly labelled so they are accessible with a screen reader.
For the best experience, Ed recommends using Chrome with JAWS or NVDA on Windows, or Safari with VoiceOver on macOS.
Global keyboard shortcuts
Standard keyboard shortcuts can be used to interact with the webpage, including:
- Tab: navigate links, buttons and fields on the page.
- Shift+Tab: navigate to previous links, buttons and fields.
- Enter: select a link, perform a button action, or otherwise perform the equivalent mouse click action on the focused element.
- Up and Down arrow keys: select options in a list.
Content editor shortcuts
In the content editor:
- Tab: switch focus out of the content editor.
- Shift+Tab: access the content editor toolbar.
- Escape: escape the content editor and discard contents.
- Ctrl+Alt+Y (PC) / Cmd+Option+Y (Mac): edit selected image alt text.
- When focus is inside a code snippet, Control+M or Control+Shift+M (Mac) toggles tab escape mode, so Tab switches focus instead of indenting.
Ed Lessons and Workspaces are almost entirely navigable by keyboard.
Ed does not have adjustable font size or contrast options, but does meet the accessibility requirements for small and large text. Text scales correctly based on browser zoom level.
What we do about known issues
We work to achieve and maintain WCAG 2.2 AA standards, but it is not always possible for all our content to be accessible. Where content is not accessible, we will state a reason, warn users and offer alternatives.
This will be monitored, and this statement will be updated accordingly should this change.
