intro
Ed Lessons
Ed Lessons is an interactive learning platform that lets instructors deliver course content, lectures, and lab materials directly to students.
- Structure: Content is organized into web-based slides, modules, reading materials, code challenges, and quizzes.
- Interactive Coding: Slides can include runnable code blocks, live terminals, and auto-graded code challenges.
- Analytics: Instructors can view class-wide, per-user, or per-slide engagement metrics.
Ed Workspaces
Ed Workspaces provides instant, cloud-based Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and Jupyter notebooks without requiring any local software installation.
- Real-Time Collaboration: Students and instructors can code together in real time using multiple cursors and live feedback.
- Versatility: Supports multiple programming languages, LaTeX document rendering, and PDF previews.
- Integration: Workspaces can be embedded directly inside of Ed Lessons for seamless transitions between reading and coding.

Accessing Ed
Through your course
- Open your course in Canvas.
- Select the Ed link or the link to the relevant lesson or workspace. Complete sign-in if prompted.
- Check that you are in the correct course, then open the activity your tutor has assigned.
Signing in directly at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ
If you can access Ed Discussion but cannot see Lessons or Workspaces, ask your teaching team whether they are available for your module. Signing in does not by itself give access to every Ed tool.
- Go to edstem.org and select Login.
- Select United Kingdom, then enter your full ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ email address rather than a shortened alias. e.g. joe.bloggs17@imperial.ac.uk
- Sign in using your usual ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ credentials and open your course.
Using Ed Lessons
Lessons may contain reading, media, questions and coding activities. It is always recommended that you read the instructions first so that you understand what is expected and can plan your time to achieve it. Work through the material in the order your teaching team recommends.
- Open the assigned lesson from your course link or the Lessons area in Ed.
- Read the instructions before starting. Check any deadline, attempt limit and assessment requirements.
- Move through the lesson sections or slides. Complete the questions and practical tasks as you go.
- For a coding task, edit the supplied files or code and use Run, where available, to try your program. Read the output and correct any errors.
- Follow the activity instructions to submit your answer. Some coding activities use Mark to submit work for testing. Read the feedback and retry only where permitted.
- Before leaving, check the activity status and any submission record shown. Return to feedback when your teaching team releases it.
Running code is not the same as submitting it. A saved file or completed reading does not confirm that an assessed answer has been submitted. Follow the submission instructions for each activity.
Using Ed Workspaces
A workspace gives you a place to work with code and files online. Your course may provide starter files or a particular programming environment.
- Open the workspace link supplied by your tutor, or select the relevant workspace in Ed.
- Read the task and inspect the supplied files. Use the environment specified by your course.
- Open the file you need in the editor and make your changes. Use the available run controls or the terminal commands your tutor provides.
- Review the output, test your changes and resolve errors. Check that your latest edits have been saved before closing the workspace.
- For assessed work, follow your course instructions for handing it in. You may need to submit through a Lesson or a separate course submission link.
Working with others
Use shared workspaces only when collaboration is permitted. Agree who will edit each part and follow your module rules on sharing code, using external help and acknowledging contributions. Do not assume that sharing a workspace submits your work. Check the instructions for submission and agree in your group who will submit.
A course or activity is missing
Check that you are using the correct ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ account and course. Reopen the original link from your course page. If the activity is still missing, ask your teaching team to check your enrolment, access and the activity release date.
Code will not run or an answer fails a test
Read the error or feedback message and compare your work with the task instructions. Check that you are running the intended file and using the required inputs. Ask your tutor for help with the exercise, including what you tried and the relevant error message.
You are unsure whether work was submitted
Reopen the activity and look for the submission status or record. Check that it corresponds to your latest attempt. If there is no clear confirmation, contact your teaching team promptly, especially if the deadline is close. Follow their advice before making another attempt after a deadline.
Ed Lessons and Workspaces are a SaaS platform for use in teaching, learning and assessment.
The platform is a good option for a wide range of code needs with modest compute needs. Your EdTech lab can help determine if this is the best option.

- Code related to teaching content is organised in Lessons. Lessons are comprised of a series of ‘slides’, which can include informational slides, quizzes, surveys and code challenges.
- Space to complete learning activities: code challenges for students to work on, with some automated feedback to students.
- Assessments which include a need for coding: code challenges for students to work on, with some automated feedback and marking, plus feedback.
- Lower compute resource needs.
- The platform supports use of a wide range of coding languages and IDE interfaces :
- Python
- R
- C++
- C#
- Java
- Julia
- Jupyter/Saturn
Accessing Ed also provides access to Ed Discussion.
