A Permit to Work is a formal authorisation used to control higher-risk work and activities that may affect ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ buildings, services or people.
It confirms the work being undertaken, the location, key hazards and the precautions that must be in place before work starts.
When is a permit required?
A Permit to Work may be required when the work involves:
- Plant or building services: for example, ventilation, cooling, steam, water, power or fire safety systems.
- Higher-risk activities: including work at height, electrical work, exposure to hazardous substances or other activities capable of causing significant harm.
- Higher-risk or restricted areas: including confined spaces, unprotected roofs, plant rooms, service risers, service tunnels and other Property-controlled restricted areas.
- Fire safety-related work: including hot works, work affecting live fire safety systems, dust-generating work requiring fire detectors to be isolated or capped, and work that may affect fire compartmentation.

When should I apply?
For planned work, submit Permit to Work requests at least five working days before the proposed work date to allow time for review and coordination.
Permits are normally valid for no more than one shift and must be issued before the work starts.
What must I submit?
A Permit to Work request must include:
- a completed Permit to Work application
- a current, task-specific Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS)
- any other supporting information or specialist approvals relevant to the work
Asbestos
Before undertaking work that may disturb the building fabric, check and confirm appropriate asbestos information before work starts.
Asbestos information can be obtained by emailing the Asbestos Manager or via phone at 020 7594 9565.
Do not start permit-controlled work until the Permit to Work has been formally authorised and issued. The urgency of the work does not remove the requirement for a permit where one is required.
