The EDI for Students unit is part of Student Essentials and is available to all students. It consists of two sections: six compulsory modules, which all students are expected to complete, and thirteen short micro-units, from which students must choose and complete four.
The compulsory modules provide a shared foundation of learning, while the micro-units offer opportunities to explore specific topics in more detail and encourage reflection and discussion. Together, these units provide a baseline understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion and support further learning throughout your studies.
Core Units
The unit introduces the core concepts of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in an educational context. It explores key definitions, how language evolves, the legislative framework that underpins EDI in the UK, and ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s own policies.

These three units cover many of the communities and identities reflected in the Equality Act’s protected characteristics. They aim to present difference in a descriptive and constructive way, focusing on understanding people’s experiences and perspectives rather than leading with discrimination. Some characteristics, such as age, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy, are not covered in dedicated units but may be referenced where relevant to the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ context.

This unit will give you an overview of what it means to be an active bystander and some practical guidance on how to safely address concerns.
This micro-unit will look at tactics for active listening and when and where it could be important.
This micro-unit will explore what allyship means and how you can be a good ally, supporting those who are part of a minoritised group.
Knowing what to say and when to say it can be challenging, especially in new environments, so this micro-unit will look at some conversational pitfalls and how to avoid them.
This unit will provide a brief overview of some of these systems and how they might affect students.
This unit will provide you with a short checklist for constructive dialogue.
This unit will explore the major ethical approaches and look at how ethics might affect education.
This unit consists of a short video to demonstrate some of the ways systemic racism can show up in Higher Education. We hope it encourages you to personally reflect, share, and spark healthy discussion.
Intersectionality is a key theory in understanding how EDI affects individuals. This micro-unit will look at what it means and where it came from.
