Academic eligibility

Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a first class or a good upper second class Honours bachelor's degree or integrated Master's degree ( or equivalent) in a relevant subject*. A pass or above at Masters level is acceptable, however a Masters degree is not required. Where an applicant does not meet this requirement (e.g. they hold a lower second class undergraduate degree), they are eligible if they hold, or expect to receive, a master's degree with minimum pass or equivalent before starting their studentship.

*Typically, we expect these to have a strong biological or biomedical science component. Applicants whose degree subject(s) do not directly focus on these, but who have relevant work experience are also welcome to apply.

Studentships awarded based on predicted grades will be conditional upon final results.

Residence eligibility

Following an announcement by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), candidates of all nationalities are eligible to apply for a HealthBRIDGE studentship, and successful candidates will receive funding that includes tuition fees covered at home level. 

Home students:
Successful home candidates will be awarded full funding. To be classed as a home student, applicants must meet criteria as set out on our College fee status page.

If an applicant does not meet the criteria to be classed as a Home student, they would be classed as an international student. 

International students:
International applicants are welcome to apply but places are restricted. This means that studentships are only offered to exceptional international candidates and are highly competitive. Prospective international applicants should note the following:

• Successful international candidates will be awarded an identical funding package as home candidates, with tuition fees covered at UKRI level. For the PhD years, this means that the department a student registers with must make up the difference to the overseas tuition level. If this is not possible, there may be restrictions on what department an international HealthBRIDGE student can do their PhD in unless they are able to fund the fees difference themselves or secure other sources of funding.  
• All successful candidates will be registered for their Foundation Year pathway at the beginning of year 1 and then registered separately for the PhD programme at the beginning of year 2. Successful international candidates will, therefore, be required to apply for separate visas for the MRes and PhD programmes. Unfortunately, the university cannot cover any of the costs associated with the separate visa applications.
