Hasselmann’s paradigm in 3D via (LA)-SALT
Abstract:
The Crisan–Holm–Korn (2023) paper realises Hasselmann’s paradigm — fast stochastic atmosphere driving a slow deterministic ocean — in a 2D coupled (LA)-SALT model. I present a 3D extension at the discrete level, on Delaunay–Voronoi meshes. The reformulation is more than a translation. In finite dimensions, the two Kelvin circulation theorems — one per component — hold pathwise on discrete cycles rather than in expectation, and CHK’s infinite-dimensional machinery collapses to elementary SDE theory. Energy estimates yield global existence. The discrete LA-SALT system recovers Hasselmann’s red-spectrum mechanism as a closed linear ODE; I close by sketching how an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck-coloured stochastic ocean would extend the framework to genuine two-time-scale dynamics.
