Whether activities are taking place at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ or away from the university campus, they should be considered an extension of the professional workplace and learning environment and offer the same protections to staff and students. We would therefore expect alumni to view their activity as an opportunity to exemplify ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and to the values and behaviours that we want to shape our working environment.

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ takes seriously any form of unlawful harassment, victimisation, or discrimination directed towards its community, including in person, over the telephone, in writing or online.

Alumni code of conduct

Statement of policy

This policy is to be read in conjunction with the University’s Freedom of Speech Code of Practice.

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Alumni Engagement team is committed to putting alumni at the heart of its service delivery. We offer alumni a range of services, benefits and programming to support their lifelong connection with ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and with the alumni community.

To benefit from these services, as members of the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ community, alumni must behave in a way that is aligned with ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s values, and to abide by the terms and conditions associated with the use of specific services.

In circumstances where alumni do not adhere to these principles and standards or exhibit inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour, their access to alumni services and benefits may be withdrawn.

Alumni are defined for this purpose as ‘any individual who has studied a full term at the university, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s constituent colleges, or any of the colleges with which ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ subsequently merged.’ Current ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ students and non-³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ guests of alumni are also covered by this policy.

Acceptance of Terms

By participating in alumni programming, you agree to abide by this policy and the following code of conduct. This includes:

  • Registering for an event sponsored, hosted, or promoted by ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and/or by alumni of ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ (including events which take place at non-³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ locations).
  • Accepting a volunteer role and/or joining an alumni network or group.
  • Engaging with ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ staff, for example through use of the alumni helpdesk email and phone number, or when meeting with staff in person.

By participating, you also acknowledge that the Alumni Code of Conduct is subject to review and might be changed without prior notice. You accept responsibility for familiarising yourself with, and abiding by, these terms.

Governance and sanctions

If ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ staff or other event hosts deem an alumnus’ behaviour to be inappropriate and in contradiction to the code of conduct above, we reserve the right to withdraw the access of the individual(s) involved to alumni services, benefits and programming. This may include removing them from events, projects, mailing lists, groups or networks. It may also include banning the individual(s) concerned from the use of or access to ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s properties, campuses, buildings, facilities, or services. A temporary or permanent ban will depend upon the significance of the behaviour or disruption to staff or other users, and the risk of damage to property.

In cases of serious misconduct, staff members, students and other alumni should report the behaviour to the Alumni Engagement team and Security. Anyone identified by the Alumni Engagement team and/or Security staff as causing any form of harassment, alarm, or distress may be required to leave the university premises or event venue. Complaints will be assessed on an individual basis. The Director of Alumni Engagement and the Head of Alumni Engagement reserve the right to impose reasonable sanctions.
