Biography

Professor Ochieng is the Head of Department, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Chair Professor in Positioning and Navigation Systems. Professor Ochieng is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Science Museum Group (SMG), appointed by the UK Prime Minister, and Chair of the Advisory Board of the Science Museum in London.

His other affiliations include Trustee, Member of Council and President of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN), and Chair of the Africa Engineers Steering Committee of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), City and Guilds Institute, UK Institutions of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, and Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors. He holds advisory roles at the Department for Transport, Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

Biography

Qiong joined the Centre for Active Resilience and Security (CARS) in November 2024, delivering the Centre’s mission and programme of activities across research, internal and external engagement, innovation and education. Previously, she led the international research and innovation pre-award operations team at Queen Mary University of London and the research and innovation development team at SOAS University of London, with a focus on increasing and diversifying funding for international collaborative projects.

Biography

Dr Ji-Eun Byun is an Assistant Professor in Transport in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Her research focuses on forecasting and quantifying uncertainty in the emergent behaviour of complex systems, with applications spanning transport and energy networks, structural and mechanical systems, and the interaction between social policy and infrastructure performance.
