Expert in wealth inequality listed among the world’s top 40 business academics under 40

A finance academic from ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School has been named in this year’s Poets&Quants Top 40 under 40.

is a US publication that covers the latest trends in global business education. Dr  Clara Martínez‑Toledano, an Assistant Professor in Finance at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School is named in its list of the world’s leading business school academics under the age of 40.  

This annual list recognises the achievements of early‑career academics for the quality of their research, teaching and real‑world impact. It is based entirely on the strength of nominations from current and former students and colleagues, and nominations must include concrete examples of teaching and research.  

Dr  Martínez‑Toledano teaches on ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Masters in Finance degree programmes and is internationally recognised for her research on how political and financial institutions shape economic inequalities within and across countries. Her work spans household finance, public economics and taxation, with a particular focus on understanding the drivers of inequality.

Alongside her role at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, Dr Martinez-Toledano serves as a Wealth Distribution and Political Cleavages Coordinator at the World Inequality Lab, contributing to research that informs public debate and policymaking worldwide. 

Her research has been recognised with a British Academy/Leverhulme Research Grant and the 2025 IIPF Peggy and Richard Musgrave Prize and has informed policy debates and reforms on wealth taxation in Spain.  

She has published in leading journals including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and her work has received more than 1,400 academic citations as well as media coverage from outlets such as Forbes. She is also co‑editor of the book, Political Cleavages and Social Inequalities (Harvard University Press, 2021).

Dr  Martínez‑Toledano is the eighth academic from ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Business School to secure a place on the Poets&Quants list in the past seven years, following Dr  Christian Hampel, Professor  Andreas Eisingerich, Dr  Laura J. Noval, Dr  Anne ter Wal, Dr  Harveen Chugh, Dr  Ileana  Stigliani, and Dr  Paolo  Taticchi.
