³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ confirmed its status as a powerhouse for company creation with the formation of 14 spinout companies in the past year.

The total matches the number of spinouts formed in the previous year, with healthy representation from all of ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s faculties. Marika Reay, Cross-Faculty Commercialisation Director, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, said: “Our team has worked hard to ensure we’re moving with the pace required to support the volume of spinout opportunities produced by ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ research, and I’m delighted to see our formation rate sustained for another year.”

Addressing global challenges

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ spinouts formed in the financial year ending July 2026 are addressing pressing challenges faced around the world, in alignment with ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s Science for Humanity strategy.

Key sectors for the past year include applied artificial intelligence and human health, with frequent crossover between the two. AI healthcare companies formed include:

  • , a brain health company developing ultrasound technology to enable accessible and universal brain imaging through the skull.
  • , which is developing regulated clinical software to predict and prevent avoidable harm to patients in hospital.
  • , which specialises in artificial intelligence analysis of electrocardiograms (ECG) to predict and diagnose cardiovascular and other health conditions before symptoms appear.

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Technology Experts Service

Many of the technologies that form the basis of ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ spinouts start life in research labs. Expertise from industry professionals and past founders is essential in bringing these nascent ideas to market. ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Technology Experts Service (ITES) brings together entrepreneurs, former C-suite executives and other experts to play a pivotal role in supporting ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ academics as they develop new technologies into practical solutions.

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ holds an annual event welcoming ITES members and spinout founders to meet and celebrate their joint achievements. This year’s event saw a series of short pitches from recent spinouts, followed by a panel discussion led by ITES member Ashley Stephenson focused on key lessons for founders developing AI-focused companies from academia.

Laura Cabo Fernandez, Commercialisation Executive, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ, who leads the ITES programme, said: “ITES members are an indispensable support mechanism for our researchers and inventors, whatever route to market they take. Working directly with seasoned industry experts brings great benefits and supports ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s spinout success.”

 ITES members have supported ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ academics with:

  • Advice on patenting decisions
  • Guidance on proof-of-concept programmes
  • Developing a compelling value proposition for new technologies
  • Facilitating industry connections
  • Reviewing and advising on startup business models, recruitment and funding strategies

Founder support across our ecosystem

³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s award-winning entrepreneurial ecosystem – recognised by Times Higher Education as the UK’s Outstanding Entrepreneurial University in 2025 – provides extensive support to founders, from undergraduates to senior academics.

  • provides a diverse range of entrepreneurial training, accelerator programmes and networks aimed at supporting all founders as they progress through their entrepreneurial journey;
  • DT-Prime supports research teams to turn deep tech and life science innovations into ventures that can scale, with non-dilutive funding deployed towards clearly defined value inflection points;
  • Founders Choice offers academics a low-friction company formation process with strong incentives;
  • , based at White City, provides wet-labs and managed office space for ambitious start-ups;
  • And West Tech London, a cluster of four major research and innovation clusters, includes substantial grow-on and lab space including Grapht Works, a unique pilot and demo manufacturing facility.
