Building confidence and capability in AI

Artificial Intelligence is changing how we work, learn and solve problems. As a leading STEMB university, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ wants every colleague to have the knowledge and confidence to understand AI, use it responsibly where appropriate, and make informed decisions about when not to use it. The aim is not for everyone to become an AI expert, but for everyone to develop a strong foundation in AI literacy.

AI for the Workplace is a new learning programme designed for all ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ staff. It combines practical skills, responsible use and real-world workplace application, helping colleagues understand where AI can support their work and where human judgement remains essential.

How the programme works

The programme consists of four connected courses:

  • Course 1: AI Foundations for Professional Contexts
  • Course 2: Responsible AI for Professional Practice
  • Course 3: Applied AI and Agentic Workflows
  • Course 4: AI in Practice Project

The first course provides a common foundation for all staff and forms the starting point for the programme. We are asking all staff to complete this course over the coming months.

Once you have completed Course 1, you will be invited to complete a short self-assessment to help identify which additional learning opportunities may be most relevant to your role and experience.

FAQs

Why is ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ launching this programme?

AI is transforming workplaces across every sector. ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ wants all colleagues to be informed, confident and capable users of AI, able to understand its opportunities, limitations and risks as we work to become sector leaders in utilising AI to achieve ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ’s mission.

Do I need to complete it?

Yes. We are asking all staff to complete Course 1: AI Foundations for Professional Contexts over the coming months. The course provides a common knowledge foundation and is the first step in ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ's approach to building AI capability across the institution.

Do I need to complete all four courses?

No. Everyone is expected to complete Course 1. After that, a self-assessment will help identify the additional learning opportunities most relevant to your role and experience.

How long does Course 1 take?

Course 1 consists of approximately 10 hours of learning, divided into three units that can be completed over time. Colleagues should discuss with their manager how best to incorporate the learning into local priorities and workloads.

Do I need any previous AI knowledge?

No. The course is designed for colleagues with a wide range of experience, including those who have never used AI before.

Who has access to the training?

The training is open to all staff and students, as well as those with honorary associations that grant them single sign-on access. It is not open to contingent workers.

Is ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ expecting everyone to use AI?

No. ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ expects colleagues to understand AI and how it can be used responsibly and effectively. The focus is on AI literacy and informed decision-making, not mandatory AI adoption.

Will AI increase my workload?

As with any new skill, learning requires an initial investment of time. Over time, AI can help colleagues work more efficiently, improve productivity, and reduce administrative effort.

Who is responsible if an AI output is wrong?

AI does not replace professional judgement or accountability. Colleagues remain responsible for reviewing outputs and ensuring decisions are appropriate, accurate and aligned with relevant policies and guidance.

Why are there separate links depending on job family?

To manage enrolment caps in Canvas, the course platform, we set up two enrolment links. Both links lead to the same content.
