Course overview

This course offers an introduction to speaking and understanding Japanese for absolute beginners. You will learn essential vocabulary and basic grammar while developing foundational skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course emphasises practical communication for everyday situations, alongside an introduction to Japanese culture and society.

As well as developing speaking and listening skills, you will be introduced to the Japanese writing systems, beginning with Hiragana, and take part in activities that promote an understanding of Japanese customs and daily life.

Sessions are designed to be accessible and engaging, building on prior learning through practical, collaborative and communicative activities. The programme will adapt to the dynamics and needs of each group, with the tutor adjusting the content and pace according to the development of skills across the group.

The course fosters an inclusive and supportive learning environment that accommodates diverse learning styles and backgrounds. Sessions encourage lively discussion, active participation and the practical application of language skills.

The course uses a textbook alongside other learning materials. Advice on which textbook to purchase will be provided in the first class.
