ShihuiShihui Liu graduated from the MSc Control course in 2015, and works as a Senior Control Engineer at Aston Martin. Although ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ was demanding, Shihui enjoyed all aspects of her time here and found it very inspiring.

Why did you choose ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ as the place to follow your interest in STEM subjects?

I chose ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ to pursue my passion for engineering not only because of the high quality of education that ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ could offer, but also the strong connection ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ had with international scholars and researchers.

How did you find life at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ as a woman?

I think my department did pretty well in supporting women in Engineering. At ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ I never felt being treated differently because of my gender

Who inspired you at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ and why?

Many professors and lecturers have inspired me when I was at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ. Professor Parisini who taught three of my main courses and supervised my final project inspired me the most with his professionalism, his passion for teaching and mentoring.

What is your fondest memory of your time here?

I can still remember the times when I stayed late to study at the Central Library, and I was never alone!

Please tell us about the work you’re doing now...

I am a Senior Control Engineer at Aston Martin Lagonda. I am working on control systems design for Aston Martin's next generation supercar.

How has what you learnt in the Department helped you in your career so far?

Not only solid theoretical knowledge on control systems, but also the confidence and ability to solve technical problems.

What have been your career highlights and challenges?

In a fast-changing industry, the biggest challenge is that I need to update my knowledge base all the time so as to make the best decision you can in workplace.

What advice would you give to women students starting a career in the sector, or girls who are thinking about studying STEM?

My advice would be to find some practical opportunities in STEM industries, companies or university laboratories as early as possible.
