This page is designed to help you put together your PhD studentship advert and the steps you need to take. The advertisement should cover the following issues:
Duration
Studentships will typically be for three years, although may also be for four years where the recipient will be undertaking a Master’s degree beforehand.
Eligibility
Most studentships will be for UK classified students only, the Research Councils will not fund OS students and other sources are unlikely to cover OS fees. Students are now expected to have a Master’s degree before undertaking a PhD, but it remains possible to take students without them.
Stipend
This may vary; however the UKRI stipend rate should be used as the minimum funding level. As this rate is reviewed and typically increases annually, please contact Jennifer Simeon to confirm the current amount if you are unsure.
Application
Applications should normally be submitted via a CV and covering letter. The ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ online application form should only be completed by the successful candidate once they have been selected.
Suggested wording
An opportunity has arisen for a [duration] PhD studentship within the Department of Surgery and Cancer at ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ funded by [funder].
[insert details of project]

Posting your advertisement:
Advertisements should be sent to Benjie Coleman for posting on the Department’s studentship webpage. You should also send it to a local administrator for posting on . Studentships may also be posted elsewhere as necessary.
Selection:
The advertiser should establish a three-member panel to review applications and create a shortlist for interview. The panel should then interview the shortlisted candidates and identify the preferred candidate. Once selected, the candidate should be instructed to submit an application through the online application portal as outlined above. Registry will then conduct the necessary eligibility checks before forwarding the application to the PGR Team for processing. The advertiser should also notify the PGR Team of the details of the selected candidate.
