Rebuilding Human Brain-Immune Interfaces: Engineering Living Models of Human Brain Development and Disease

Brain-resident immune cells actively sense, interpret and reshape their tissue environment, yet their most relevant functions remain difficult to access in conventional model systems. This talk will present our efforts to engineer human organoid and assembloid platforms that reconstruct brain–immune interfaces in living tissue. By integrating stem-cell biology, bioengineering, single-cell profiling and in vivo transplantation, we use these systems to uncover how human microglia acquire context-dependent functions across health, disease and tumor-associated environments, and how these functions might ultimately be reprogrammed for therapeutic benefit.

Understanding Jak-STAT cytokine signalling in inflammation

We are pleased to welcome Professor Simon Jones, Co-Director of the Systems Immunity Research Institute and the Hodge Centre for Translational Neuroscience at Cardiff University, as our guest speaker.

Professor Jones is an internationally recognised authority in cytokine biology. His pioneering research has transformed our understanding of how cytokines regulate inflammation and has led to the development of innovative approaches for treating immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. His work on interleukin-6 (IL-6) signalling has had a major impact on both academic research and the development of biological medicines used in clinical practice.

In addition to his research achievements, Professor Jones advises the pharmaceutical sector on biological medicines, serves on major research funding and advisory panels, and plays a leading role in the International Cytokine & Interferon Society. He has received numerous honours, including the Boltzmann Award for cytokine research, and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Member of Academia Europaea.

This London Hypoxia Networking (LHN) meeting will introduce attendees to the dynamic and rapidly expanding field of hypoxia research with growing implications ranging from basic molecular biology to vascular homeostasis and medicine.

Speaker Bio

Jacqueline Castle is Chief Technology Officer at the Aerospace Technology Institute, where she is accountable for the ATI’s Technology Strategy to ensure UK Aerospace remains at the forefront of global aerospace and firmly on the path to a sustainable future.

Prior to joining the ATI, Jacqueline spent more than 25 years in the Aerospace Industry at Airbus.
She was the UK Chief Engineer for the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, with responsibility for the
wings, landing gear and fuel system. Prior to this she held positions as the UK Chief Engineer for the
A380 aircraft, the A330neo development, lead A380 and A350 landing gear engineering and headed
up the Wing Design Authority organisation.

Jacqueline is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Institution of
Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society. She is a Mechanical Engineering graduate
from the University of the West of England and gained an MSc in Aerospace Design from the
University of Bristol, where she is Aegis Professor of Aerospace Technologies at the Faculty of
Science & Engineering.

This 4-day interactive course comprises a mix of presentations, hands-on team workshop activities, and guest speaker case studies all related to Human Centred Design in Medical Device Development. The learning objectives of the course are:

Learn what Human Centred Design is,
Understand why its important to include the user throughout the development process,
Discover research methods to help understand your users’ needs and research objective,
Be aware of the use-related regulatory aspects required for medical device development,
Identify idea generating tools to use to solve user’s problems,
Uncover how to test your ideas with the people you’re designing for,
Think about how to consider, manage and present to varying stakeholders.

This course is run in partnership with the CRUK Convergence Science Centre PhD training programme.

About the Talk

A large part of the UK’s current economic difficulties arise from the fact that its major cities outside London underperform, with productivity levels in second-tier city regions like Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, and the Glasgow City Region remaining below the UK average. In connection with these regional disparities in economic performance, the attention of policy makers has been drawn to the fact that levels of public and private research and development in these cities is below average, and recent policy initiatives, such as the previous government’s “Innovation Accelerator” Pilot, and the current government’s “Local Innovation Partnership Fund”, have sought to address this.

In this talk, Professor Jones will reflect on the experience of Greater Manchester’s Mayoral Combined Authority in building and implementing an innovation strategy aligned with the city region’s wider economic and social goals. Among the factors that have emerged as being important in this enterprise are:

Coherent, evidence-based, and enduring local industrial strategy, identifying and supporting sectoral clusters with growth potential,
Local political buy-in, with strong governance and connection with wider policy levers in areas like skills, transport and planning,
Partnership working across public and private sectors, including connections with capital markets,
Integration with wider regional and national innovation systems,
Strong relationships with central government and its agencies.

Professor Jones will discuss some of the successes, and some of the tensions that emerge, in such efforts to build stronger city-region innovation systems.

Speaker’s Bio

Richard Jones is an experimental soft matter physicist with a long standing interest in innovation policy and regional economic growth; he was, until September 2025, Vice-President for Regional Innovation and Civic Engagement, at the University of Manchester, where he is currently Emeritus Professor of Materials Physics and Innovation Policy.

His first degree and PhD in Physics both come from Cambridge University and following postdoctoral work at Cornell University, USA, he was a lecturer at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. He was a Professor of Physics at the University of Sheffield from 1998, moving to Manchester in 2020.

In 2006 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, in recognition of his work in the field of polymers and biopolymers at surfaces and interfaces and in 2009 he won the Tabor Medal of the UK’s Institute of Physics for his contributions to nanoscience.

He is the author of more than 190 research papers, and three books, Polymers at Surfaces and Interfaces (with Randal Richards, CUP 1999), Soft Condensed Matter, (OUP 2002), and Soft Machines: Nanotechnology and Life (OUP 2004).

He was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Sheffield from 2009 to 2016, was a member of EPSRC Council from 2013 – 2018, and chaired Research England’s Technical Advisory Group for the Knowledge Exchange Framework. He was a member of the Sheffield/Manchester Industrial Strategy Commission, and was a Co-I of the ESRC funded Productivity Institute. He has written extensively about science and innovation policy, for example in the recent reports “The Missing Four Billion: making research and development work for the whole UK” (with Tom Forth, NESTA 2020) and “Science and innovation policy for hard times: an overview of the UK’s Research and Development landscape” (The Productivity Institute, 2022).

In Greater Manchester, he was the Independent Science Advisor to Innovation GM, a public-private partnership bringing together business, the GM Combined Authority and GM’s universities with the goal of developing Greater Manchester’s innovation ecosystem to help level up communities, generate the solutions needed to achieve net zero, and create the conditions for more businesses in more places to benefit from global exporting and inward investment.

We’re delighted to invite you to an alumni get-together this September — a special occasion as we celebrate our 10-year graduation milestone together.

It’s hard to believe how much time has passed since late nights in the library, last-minute coursework rushes, and the friendships that carried us through it all. Whether you’ve stayed closely in touch or it’s been years since you last saw familiar faces, we’d love for you to join us and pick up right where we left off.

This will be an informal gathering — no agenda, just good company, shared memories, and the chance to hear where life has taken everyone.
We’re all really hoping to see as many of you there as possible to mark this milestone together.

Finance – Deadline for requesting a new supplier

What you need to do

If you need to use a new supplier and want a Purchase Order in place before the October freeze, your supplier request must be with Procurement by 21 September. Allow two weeks for supplier setup, then further time to raise and approve the Purchase Order before 19 October.

Include bank details – requests without them will be delayed.
If you miss this date, use a blanket Purchase Order against an existing approved supplier to cover your needs during the freeze.

What if I only need the supplier set up, not a Purchase Order?
Supplier setup freezes on 12 October. Get the request in before then. You can request new suppliers again from w/c 16 November once Atlas is live – guidance on the new process will be shared before go live.
