Mohammad Zaid Abid Dalla, MSc Strategic Marketing, received the Improving Society award for leading impactful community initiatives as VP of Societal Engagement, including the What the Tech?! digital literacy programme and a Christmas dinner for care leavers, both of which fostered social inclusion and student volunteerism.

Dhruv Syam, BSc Economics, Finance & Data Science, received the Improving Society award for revitalising the Effective Altruism Society at �ԹϺ�� and launching initiatives such as the Intro Fellowship and Impact Research Groups, which promote ethical, evidence-based engagement and empower students to address global challenges.

Paolo Stagni, MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management, received the award for Inspiring Brilliant Minds for launching �ԹϺ��ϡ�s first-ever Hult Prize On Campus Competition, mobilising over 100 students and coordinating a major cross-campus event that brought global social entrepreneurship to the heart of the university.

This year��s result is particularly notable as the ranking has expanded from 15 schools last year to 20 institutions globally.?

How has your professional journey across industries prepared you for leadership?

My journey has been more diverse than I ever anticipated. I started at the intersection of healthcare and AI, researching machine learning?for computer-aided medical diagnosis, before transitioning briefly into the energy sector as a software engineer.

For the last decade, however, I have worked in financial services?in various data leadership roles. Today, I lead a function at Bloomberg where we are embedding industrial engineering techniques into our data manufacturing processes.

Why did you choose an Executive MBA at this stage of your career, and why �ԹϺ��?

I��ve reached a pivotal point where my role has shifted from managing specialists to driving large-scale organisational transformation. While my technical foundation is solid, leading a transformation function at a global firm like Bloomberg requires a broader, multi-dimensional toolkit. I see the Executive MBA as the bridge to the next decade of my career, providing the intellectual rigour and diverse perspectives necessary to move from functional leadership to high-impact business leadership.

Having hired several �ԹϺ�� engineering alumni throughout my career, I was already well-acquainted with the calibre of the community and the strength of the brand. I wanted to be part of an ecosystem that does not just teach management in a vacuum but understands how to harness technical innovation to solve real-world business challenges.

What are the benefits of balancing an Executive MBA with full-time work?

I view my organisation as a laboratory for the frameworks I��m learning in the classroom. Beyond applying strategy and design thinking to my own projects, I see my role as a 'multiplier'; taking the tools and insights gained at �ԹϺ�� and sharing them to develop the talent around me. For instance, I��m already viewing our philanthropic initiatives through the lens of the Corporate Sustainability module, allowing me to contribute more strategically to our firm's broader social impact.

Why pursue an Executive MBA at this stage of a senior healthcare career?

I��ve worked across pharmaceuticals, medtech, digital health and healthcare innovation, often at the intersection of science, business and policy. Today, my work focuses on strategic leadership in healthcare, alongside independent initiatives aimed at improving how health systems translate evidence into practice.

At this stage of my career, I am already operating at a senior level. My focus is increasingly on preventive healthcare and system-level change - moving upstream, where earlier intervention, better data use and smarter incentives can improve outcomes at scale.

What I need is not functional training, but space to sharpen judgment, challenge assumptions and strengthen how I lead across organisations and systems. The Executive MBA provides exactly that, without stepping away from practice.

Why is a STEM-focused Executive MBA advantageous for healthcare leaders?

Understanding technology and innovation is critical for leaders today, particularly in healthcare. Decisions increasingly shape not just organisations, but patient outcomes and population health. �ԹϺ��ϡ�s science-driven environment supports a more responsible and informed approach to innovation.

How will the Executive MBA strengthen your leadership and decision-making skills?

For me, leadership is about creating clarity where systems are complex, making informed decisions with incomplete information and enabling others to do their best work. It is as much about responsibility and judgment as it is about direction.

Through the Executive MBA, I want to further strengthen my systems thinking, strategic decision-making in uncertainty and executive communication �C particularly where science, regulation and business priorities intersect.

Alongside the strategy, leadership and innovation-focused modules, learning alongside experienced peers adds depth and realism to every discussion. It surfaces blind spots and challenges comfortable thinking in ways that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

What is your reason for pursuing an Executive MBA?

For the past six and a half years, I��ve been immersed in the cybersecurity industry at Darktrace. For that reason, pursuing an Executive MBA will serve a dual purpose. First, it��s about becoming a more well-rounded leader and ensuring that I can collaborate effectively across functions and speak the language of finance, operations, product and other critical areas of the organisation.

Second, it��s about preparation for the next chapter. As I look toward more senior leadership roles, I recognise that success at that level requires not just functional expertise but strategic thinking, financial acumen and the ability to lead holistically across the business. The Executive MBA is my investment in building that foundation now so that when the opportunity comes, I��m ready to step into it with confidence.

Which modules and leadership initiatives are you most looking forward to?

I��m particularly excited about the ��Leveraging AI for Sustainable Business Value�� module. Given the pace of AI adoption in my industry, this module feels incredibly timely, addressing how we move beyond experimentation to create genuine, sustainable value. Assessing AI initiatives through a holistic business lens �C considering operational changes, ROI, risk and long-term viability �C is a skill I want to develop further.

Beyond the classroom learning, I��m particularly excited about the leadership journey with our Executive Coaches. That kind of personalised development will directly influence how I show up as a leader: how I present to senior stakeholders, how I coach and develop my team and how I navigate complex interpersonal dynamics within the organisation.

How does learning with senior executive peers enhance the Executive MBA experience?

Learning alongside experienced executive peers is one of the most valuable aspects of the Executive MBA for me. The ability to discuss a complex business challenge with smart, accomplished professionals who come from completely different industries, opens perspectives I simply wouldn��t encounter in my day-to-day work in tech and cybersecurity.

What has your career journey in healthcare looked like to date?

I was trained as a kidney medicine specialist and worked in clinical practice before joining the pharmaceutical ?industry, which is where I��ve been for the last 13 years. I��m currently one of the global leads for the medical affairs function in Astellas Pharmaceuticals. My role bridges science and strategy in healthcare organisations, ensuring that accurate, evidence-based information is generated, communicated and applied in the industry.

What does being part of the �ԹϺ�� Business School community mean to you?

I am very excited to be a part of the �ԹϺ�� Business School global family. This strong and extensive network is one that I hope to rely on to find guidance and support for any future ventures. From potential new business partners, to nurturing future leaders who share the same aspirations as me, the community here really does show you the value of �ԹϺ��.

Beyond career progression, what long-term impact do you think �ԹϺ�� and the Executive MBA will have on you?

As a proud recipient of the �ԹϺ�� LGBTQ+ Scholarship, I believe that studying at �ԹϺ�� will ensure that inclusion is not merely talked about, but actively practised.

How has your professional journey across strategy, technology and communications shaped your leadership perspective?

I have spent 17 years at the intersection of strategy, technology and communication across banking, consulting, fintech, research and media. In my most recent role, I served as VP of Communications & Engagement for the ProductTechnology division, partnering with CIOs on large-scale digital transformation.

What has shaped my perspective is navigating complexity - regulatory environments, cross-cultural stakeholder management and translating technical transformation into narratives that drive change. I have learned that the hardest problems are rarely technical; they are about alignment, clarity and bringing people along.

What made �ԹϺ�� Business School stand out when researching Executive MBA

After evaluating other London-based programmes, �ԹϺ�� consistently emerged as the strongest choice for me. It stood out because it is built for leaders who operate in environments where technology is not adjacent to strategy but embedded in it.

With expert faculty across AI, data science and engineering, the modular structure and its London location offered a compelling combination of academic depth and practical applicability. The Executive MBA felt designed for the world we are stepping into, not the one we are leaving behind.

Why was an Executive MBA the right choice at this stage of your career?

I��ve led communications, marketing and strategic initiatives across a wide range of industries. While I��m confident in the impact I can deliver today, I wanted to deepen my understanding of finance, data analytics and artificial intelligence - areas that now sit at the heart of strategic decision-making.

This stage of my career also demands strong judgment and balance. Managing senior leadership roles alongside raising a three-and-a-half-year-old has reinforced the value of focus, preparation and a sense of humour to make even the busiest weeks workable �C if I can survive toddler negotiations, I can survive modular deadlines.

With this in mind, taking a purposeful career break to pursue an Executive MBA at �ԹϺ�� felt like the right next step. The curriculum promises to accelerate my development and enable me to contribute confidently at board level and lead transformational programs with authority.

How has your employer supported your decision to pursue an Executive MBA at �ԹϺ��?

The response from my employer has been very positive. Throughout my career, I have worked across intergovernmental organisations �C most notably the United Nations �C where I have contributed to policy research and analysis, project implementation and international consensus building. More recently, I have stepped into a new position as External Relations Officer.

In my role, there is a strong appreciation for the importance of continuous learning and leadership development, particularly in the complex geopolitical and rapidly evolving technological landscape. The Executive MBA is seen not only as an individual investment, but one that will strengthen my ability to contribute more thoughtfully and strategically in my professional role.

What are the benefits of learning alongside executive professionals from diverse sectors?

Coming from an intergovernmental and multilateral background, I am currently the only participant in my cohort with this type of industry experience. This makes the opportunity for cross-sectoral learning particularly valuable. I am keen not only to learn from peers in the private sector, but also to contribute a different perspective shaped by policy, diplomacy and international cooperation. This exchange helps challenge perceptions on both sides and ultimately leads to more nuanced, well-rounded leadership thinking.

Why are immersive global experiences important for senior leaders?

For leaders at this level, immersive global experiences provide the opportunity to step outside familiar environments and engage directly with different innovation ecosystems, leadership cultures and ways of thinking �C all of which are critical when operating in complex, global settings.

Having witnessed first-hand the level of advancement, innovation and dynamism across the Global South, I see them as the next frontier for economic growth and investment and am keen to explore global experiences in these markets.

How has your professional journey across business, media and social impact evolved so far?

My career has evolved across business development, strategy and community-led initiatives at the intersection of media, healthcare, finance and social impact?. Having worked across Australia, Hong Kong, the United States and the UK, I��ve developed a global perspective on how organisations operate within complex systems.

I currently serve as Director of Coalitions and Community Innovation at Bloomberg Media, where I collaborate with a global network of CEOs, policymakers, subject matter experts and entrepreneurs to develop actionable solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing business and society, particularly in climate and health.

How will you leverage �ԹϺ��ϡ�s global network and diverse Executive MBA community?

As organisations and industries continue to evolve at a record-breaking pace, staying intellectually agile requires exposure to perspectives beyond one��s immediate sector or role. What has your professional background in global financial markets looked like?

My career spans two decades in global financial markets, with a strong focus on cross-asset solutions across FX, rates, credit and structured products.

I am currently an Executive Director at BBVA London in the Global Markets division, working as a cross-asset sales and coverage professional focused on Turkey, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. My role sits at the intersection of client coverage, structuring and strategic origination, helping financial institutions navigate balance-sheet, funding and risk-management challenges in complex and often volatile markets.

How does the Executive MBA enable immediate application of learning at work?

I view the programme as an integrated part of my professional development rather than a parallel activity. At this stage of my career, learning must be practical, immediately applicable and intellectually demanding. The Executive MBA allows me to build on experience rather than pause it, while providing structured reflection on leadership, strategy and transformation.

What does International Women��s Day mean to you and how are you celebrating this day???

International Women��s Day is for me a chance to champion female voices and women��s contribution to all areas of life and culture. I like to celebrate by crowdsourcing a list of amazing female-led podcasts, documentaries, films, books, music and business initiatives from friends and colleagues, and sending the list out to everyone I know. I always discover amazing new women who are changing the world in ways big and small and I love being able to share these too.???

Oh and I listen to Flo and Joan��s comedy song ��Lady Crisps�� on repeat.??

How does �ԹϺ�� Business School make you feel empowered???

I��m honoured to be President of the Dean��s Student Advisory Council this year. Holding this position means that I get to be visible as a female leader every day, working with an incredible council of diverse and talented students to help ensure that all voices are heard and amplified where necessary. Every day is a learning day, but I feel empowered to push myself, to learn from my peers and my mistakes and to be held to account in a safe and

Who are your female role models and why? What is your proudest achievement?????

This is my book club pictured above. They are simultaneously my most trusted female role models and my proudest achievement. I started this book club when I moved to London, as a monthly meet up for friends and friends of friends who were new to the city and didn��t yet have a support network around them. Over the past 5 years we have become the best of friends and each other��s biggest champions, and they impress and inspire me every day.? ?

We support each other through personal and professional highs and lows. These wonderful women are the cheerleaders you need to guide you through break-ups and house moves. The ones who help you stand up to your awful boss and turn tears of frustration into tears of laughter. They are the first to call for a celebration when one of us does something amazing and were all there for each other online or socially distanced throughout lockdown.?

They have taught so much over the years, always encouraging me to do and be better for others and for myself. I am so proud of and grateful for every single one of these women, and of having been able to bring us all together. I don��t know what I would do without them. I certainly wouldn��t have made it through the MBA application process, let alone the first 6 months of the programme.? ?

What is a quote that you live by?or a piece of advice you��d pass to another woman??

What does International Women��s Day mean to you and how are you celebrating this day??

International Women's Day is a significant and meaningful day for me as a woman. This day serves as a reminder of all the women who have advocated for equality and made it possible for me to enjoy greater chances and freedoms than prior eras. It is a day to honour the significant contributions that women have made to society and to acknowledge the success of women in a variety of fields, including politics, academia, business, and the arts.??

I would like to honour all the women who have made important and unsung contributions to my life on this International Women's Day. They equipped me with the opportunities and motivation I lacked to pursue my goals and aspirations and to have belief in my ability to change the world.?

What��s your biggest achievement to date??

My biggest achievement to date was the moment I received my acceptance letter from �ԹϺ�� Business School. As �ԹϺ�� is the sixth best university in the world (QS World University Rankings 2023), I knew that the competition was fierce, and the admission process would be challenging. However, with hard work and perseverance, I was able to overcome the hurdles and secure my spot at this prestigious institution. The fact that I received a 100% scholarship (Rajeev Gandhi Scholarship for Academic Excellence) added to the sense of accomplishment and made the achievement even more meaningful. Looking back on that moment, I still feel a sense of disbelief and gratitude. It was a dream come true, and it was a testament to the power of dedication and determination.?

Marilyn Monroe's famous statement that "Well-behaved women seldom make history" is a strong assertion that challenges the traditional view of how women should behave in society. The quote encourages women to be fearless, take chances, and leave their mark on the world. It inspires women to question conventional gender roles and expectations and to tenaciously follow their ambitions.??

Who are your female role models and why??

In Hinduism, we believe that every soul lives seven lives and gets reincarnated again and again until they reach enlightenment. I want my mother to be with me in every single one of them. My mum is my greatest role model in every sense of the world, personal, professional, physical, and emotional. She is an incredible source of inspiration for me, and I look up to her for guidance and support. Her unwavering strength, resilience, and compassion have been the driving force behind my own personal and professional development, and I am grateful for her influence every single day. I hope to continue to learn from her and impersonate her best qualities for the rest of my life. ?

What does International Women��s Day mean to you and how are you celebrating this day???

I grew up in a country, where International Women��s Day is celebrated with great festivity, therefore March 8th?is a special day for me. In fact, Armenia also commemorates Motherhood and Beauty Day on the 7th of April, which extends the celebration of women to a whole month. International Women's Day not only acknowledges the past achievements of women but also empowers us to strive for our goals despite any obstacles we may face. However, often the meaning of this day is confused and simply viewed as a celebration of the mere existence of women in men's lives, rather than acknowledging their accomplishments in professional fields and recognising their significant role in science. My ultimate hope is for the world to attain such equality that Women's Day would no longer be necessary, and every individual would have equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender.??

What��s your biggest achievement??

One of my notable achievements is founding an organisation that supports students studying abroad and contributes to the advancement of education quality in Armenia. Recently what made me feel proud was conquering my fear of heights during a challenging mountain hike that reached an altitude of 4070m.?

Who are your female role models and why??

I am inspired by those who have the courage to embrace themselves, persevere in pursuit of their goals despite opposition or obstacles, and are willing to stand up and fight against injustice instead of being indifferent to it. Joan of Arc and Mother Teresa are historical figures whom I greatly admire. The first exemplifies the courage, bravery, and fearlessness we need as leaders and the second demonstrates how love and kindness have the power to change the world. Furthermore, Alenush Terian, an exceptional astronomer and physicist, fosters motivation within us to cultivate a passion for science and technology.?

It is not just a day to celebrate how far women have come but how much potential they hold and how far they can go.?

What��s your biggest achievement??

Making it to �ԹϺ�� Business School is one of my greatest achievements in life amongst others. As a child I cultivated a dream of moving abroad to pursue higher studies and �ԹϺ�� Business School has made that dream come true. Today, as I walk to campus every morning, it gives me immense pleasure to think that I��m soon going to be an alumnus of one of the most prestigious universities in the world.?

Who are your female role models and why???

My greatest role model has and will always be my mother for she endowed me with the strength to conquer everything I ever undertook. From supporting me in my professional classical dance career to allowing me to study abroad, she and my father have paved the way to give me the best life possible. Fighting the challenges of a tough childhood herself, she made it a point to give me the best of everything she couldn��t get. I have always been an admirer of the woman she is and how graciously she carries herself both professionally and personally.?

What does International Women��s Day mean to you and how are you celebrating this day???

As a young woman, I find March 8th ?to be an empowering celebration of countless achievements of women worldwide. It is also a day to acknowledge the existing gender inequalities still prevalent in our societies and an opportunity to discuss what we can do to combat them. This year, my girlfriends and I are attending the Women of the World Festival hosted at the Southbank Centre. This space brings together activists, writers, and other exceptional individuals to celebrate the global feminist movement.?

What��s your biggest achievement and who is your role model??

Despite progress, girls around the world continue to face unprecedented challenges in accessing education. In response to this challenge, during my bachelor's degree, I co-founded a company that guides students to access and secure scholarships in the most prestigious universities across the US and UK. This enterprise idea was inspired by my role model, Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani female education activist who became the youngest Nobel Prize laureate at the age of 17. She drew global attention to the threats and challenges to girls' education in Pakistan, and her bravery and passion still guide many girls to fight for their rights.?

How does �ԹϺ�� Business School make you feel empowered??

I am surrounded by talented women who work in finance and who have shattered the glass ceiling. This network has inspired me to co-found the Real Estate Society and create a pathway for other women to enter the male-dominated sector of commercial real estate. This is important to me as I also want to break through this industry, and I want to equip students with the necessary skills to have equal opportunities to enter this sector.?

What is a quote that you live by?or a piece of advice you��d pass to another woman??

?This powerful quote from Malala captures the motivation that everything is within our reach, and we need to be proactive to act upon our dreams; ��Some people only ask others to do something. I believe that, why should I wait for someone else? Why don't I take a step and move forward?��?

International Women��s Day is a day to celebrate women voice and empowerment! I will be celebrating this day by cherishing the presence of my female friends and family members through expressing my utmost gratitude to them through sending words of affirmation and free hugs if I see them in person!??

What��s your biggest achievement??

My biggest achievement is being the first female member of my family to pursue a master��s degree! To add on to that, I am pursuing a master��s degree overseas! Through this achievement, I wish to set an example for my cousins and my future children that the sky is the limit and education is equal for all �C all you need to do is work hard and stay strong in your own beliefs and virtues!?

Who are your female role models and why??

This will sound very clich��, but my female role model is my mama! (or ��衱 in Mandarin Chinese). She left her corporate job and sacrificed so much of her blood, sweat and tears to raise us. As a stay-home mum, she is constantly working 24/7 (not to mention, this is a full-time job without monetary compensation). She is my biggest mental health supporter and adviser and I would not be who I am today without her.??

We recently caught up with alumni from the Full-Time MBA, Weekend MBA and Global Online MBA programmes, gaining an insight into their career journeys after �ԹϺ��. From breaking into new industries to building confidence and expertise, they reflect on the lessons and opportunities that shaped their path, offering advice to those who are about to follow in their footsteps.

Arathi Nair

Programme: Full-Time MBA, Class of 2025

Current role and organisation: AI Product Builder, OakNorth

How did �ԹϺ��ϡ�s Full-Time MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

I work at a bank operating in digital lending, business banking and personal savings. My role sits at the intersection of technology, product and financial services, where I help build and scale AI-driven solutions.

The Full-Time MBA was a great sandbox where I could experiment with strategy, marketing and product-focused work beyond my engineering background. Group projects such as analysing PUMA��s strategy and conducting a marketing audit on Lime bikes closely mirror what I do in my day-to-day work now.

My work also involves cross-functional collaboration with legal, compliance and finance operations teams internationally, which directly reflects the holistic perspective I gained during the MBA.

Structured thinking and academic frameworks aside, the programme was important for me to build the confidence to transition to a strategy and product role. Without the MBA, I would likely have continued in software development, with limited exposure to business strategy or product leadership.

What advice would you give students and recent graduates on choosing a career path and entering the job market?

I had to be iterative, so from my experience I would recommend using internships, projects and coursework to test what genuinely interests you rather than over-planning upfront. And of course, be adaptable, as roles today often sit at the intersection of multiple domains, so leaning into interdisciplinary skills can be a major advantage.

What are the most important opportunities at �ԹϺ�� that current MBA students should make sure they don��t miss?

For me, I would say that the alumni mentorship programmes are an invaluable part of the MBA experience. Having mentors across different stages of their careers was key to knowing what was going on in the industry and keeping my finger on current trends.

Another opportunity to get involved in is the Careers Fairs. They��re busy days and a lot of students attend, but make sure to throw yourself into the experience as it��s a great way to initiate contact with recruiters. What��s really key is how you follow up and build the relationship afterwards.

How have you stayed connected with �ԹϺ�� since graduating, and why is this so valuable for your ongoing career?

My brilliant Career Consultant and mentors have been a strong support system for me post-graduation and helped me to navigate the job market and interviews. I would say that the real value of an MBA lies in the network �C with your cohort as well as the Careers support. These relationships can open doors to opportunities, insights and long-term career growth if you put the effort into maintaining them.

Programme: Weekend MBA, Class of 2022

Current role and organisation: Project Leader, Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

How does your current work relate to your MBA studies at �ԹϺ��?

The electives that I chose link very closely with my current role. This includes a broader understanding from the Strategy module and Capstone Consulting Experience, which allowed me to work with team mates to solve a strategic problem facing a real client.

The Mergers and Acquisitions elective provided a more focused insight, with the idea of value creating transactions tying in very nicely to my BCG work in Post Merger Integrations and Carve-Outs.

How did �ԹϺ��ϡ�s Weekend MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

I think the single biggest thing that �ԹϺ�� Business School did for my career was allow me to demonstrate how I was investing in my professional development in a meaningful way. I started �ԹϺ�� when I was leaving the army and studying here gave me a great foundation in business understanding while also allowing me to translate my previous experience into broader evidence based on my competencies. I am not sure I would have landed my job at BCG had I not done the MBA.

What is one practical step someone who has just graduated can take to boost their career prospects?

A practical step you can take is to start talking to everyone and anyone in the industry you��re interested in exploring to boost your understanding on where to start and how to succeed in entering the job market.

Felicity Box

Programme: Full-Time MBA, Class of 2023

Current role and organisation: Senior Solutions Engineer, Sweep

How does your current work relate to your MBA studies at �ԹϺ��?

I work at a climate tech scale-up focused on carbon accounting and ESG reporting, helping companies navigate sustainability reporting requirements. My role combines technical expertise with customer engagement, blending focused analysis with teaching and presenting.

I applied for an MBA because I wanted to transition from my data analyst position in the publishing industry into climate tech and sustainability. I chose �ԹϺ�� Business School because of its connections with the Grantham Institute and the number of elective modules focused on sustainability. I made the most of them, taking every sustainability focused elective available, and that academic grounding gave me the vocabulary, frameworks and credibility I needed to speak the language of sustainability professionals. This is what got me through the door and landed me the role. I��ve been learning on the job ever since.

How did �ԹϺ��ϡ�s Full-Time MBA prepare you for your career, and what changed in your career trajectory because of it?

Before my MBA, I was applying for sustainability roles as an analyst and I didn��t get a single interview. Studying at �ԹϺ�� gave me the industry knowledge I needed to succeed in the move I was trying to make on my own. Today, when I'm speaking with ESG teams about their reporting obligations, I have industry context drawn from so many different case studies across the MBA, as well as a real understanding of the specific frameworks and challenges in sustainability. I draw on my knowledge from the Full-Time MBA every single day.

Electives like the Entrepreneurial Journey and Wicked Problems, Systems Dynamics and Entrepreneurial Innovation taught me that some of my strengths lie in pitching and presenting, even winning a prize for a presentation �C a real highlight on the programme. This realisation changed the kinds of roles I was considering applying for and ultimately landed me in my current role that I hold today, where I present to sustainability leaders daily.

What advice would you give to students and recent graduates?

My biggest piece of advice is to take the time to understand how the skills and experience built through both the MBA and in previous jobs can intersect with the industry you want to enter and build your story from there.

During my MBA, through networking, events and honest conversations with people already working in the sustainability space, I came to realise that my data analytics background was an asset �C a genuine differentiator. As an industry full of data challenges, my experience meant that I could bring something real and immediately useful to the table. The market for scale-ups building new sustainability technologies was, and still is, welcoming of people who can work with data intelligently.

As soon as I understood that, I re-framed how I presented myself, highlighting why the skills from my work history on top of the foundational knowledge gained from the MBA were valuable. In doing this, I became a really strong candidate in the spaces I was looking for.

What is one practical step someone who has just graduated can take to boost their career prospects immediately?

Use AI tools to generate ideas or to structure your thinking, or use it to ensure your CV is error free, but use it carefully. As someone who has hired a lot of people since finishing my MBA, I can confirm that it is immediately obvious when a CV or interview prep has been generated by AI.

Today, the candidates who feel like real people on the page are the ones who stand out. And that is becoming much rarer, which means it is a real competitive advantage.

What are the most important opportunities at �ԹϺ�� that current MBA students should make sure they don't miss?

�ԹϺ�� offers an enormous range of opportunities: sports clubs, volunteering, investment and finance clubs, entrepreneurship programmes, competitions and global experiences. If something piques your curiosity, then go for it. The MBA is a rare gift of time �C a protected space to experiment and discover where you actually shine.

The Global Online MBA at �ԹϺ�� Business School has had a profound impact on both my career trajectory and confidence as a leader. I started the programme as a strong technical and governance expert in data and technology. �ԹϺ�� has helped me to broaden my perspective globally and strategically, and now I can position myself not just as a specialist, but as someone capable of influencing outcomes across a business.

What advice would you give to students and recent graduates?

My advice would be to consider your early career as a winding path, rather than a straight ladder. The goal should not just be about salary or title, but about learning velocity, gaining exposure and building relationships.

Adaptability, communication and leadership are often key differentiators. I��m finding that employers increasingly value individuals who can connect data with business outcomes, collaborate across cultures and lead through uncertainty.

For those still studying, don��t underestimate the power of extracurricular leadership. Some of my biggest growth moments came from participating in the Student Staff Committee, the Dean��s Student Advisory Council and other voluntary leadership and community roles. Through these, I learnt about stakeholder management, resilience and teamwork in practical ways.

What is one practical step someone who has just graduated can take to boost their career prospects immediately?

One practical step a new graduate can take is to intentionally build their professional narrative online, particularly on platforms like LinkedIn. Some of my own posts around leadership, diversity, governance and community impact ended up creating opportunities, conversations and connections I never anticipated. In many cases, opportunities come from not just what you know, but from those who see what you care about.

What are the most important opportunities at �ԹϺ�� that current MBA students should make sure they don't miss?

I would strongly encourage students to maximise �ԹϺ��ϡ�s broader ecosystem, particularly in departments specialising in technology and science. Studying at a university where business students can easily interact with engineers, scientists, technologists and mathematicians creates a uniquely future-focused environment. As aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs, this collaboration is vital.

How have you stayed connected with �ԹϺ�� since graduating, and why is this so valuable for your ongoing career?

Since graduating, I��ve assisted with MBA recruitment, mentored current MBA students and collaborated with fellow alumni.

Despite living on the other side of the world in Australia, these connections have been incredibly valuable in a global and interdisciplinary business world. Some of the conversations and friendships I��ve built during my MBA continue to influence how I think about leadership, innovation and impact today.

The Global Experience Week gives �ԹϺ��ϡ�s MBA students a unique chance to immerse themselves in innovative international business environments. For Weekend MBA Class of 2023 alumnus Ishaan Rajankar, it sparked a long-term collaboration driving real-world impact and growth.

During the week-long trip to Nairobi, Kenya, Ishaan and his fellow MBA students explored how local organisations are tackling global business challenges through innovative, community-led solutions. For Ishaan, whose passion lies in using innovation to create meaningful change, a visit to Spring Valley Coffee �C a local Kenyan coffee company �C developed into a collaboration for �ԹϺ��ϡ�s Capstone Consulting Experience.

As an initiative that challenges students to develop strategic solutions for real businesses, the Capstone Consulting Experience allowed Ishaan and his team to create recommendations to help with Spring Valley Coffee��s global expansion �C to great success.

Ishaan��s story highlights how �ԹϺ��ϡ�s Global Experience Week can act as a catalyst, bringing together academia with industry to create meaningful and impactful partnerships that continue to evolve long after the trip has ended.

I deliberately chose electives on the Weekend MBA that focused on building an inclusive and regenerative economy to drive meaningful change. Guest lecturers from organisations like Bloomberg and The New York Times also highlighted the importance of community-driven impact.

So, when we travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, I saw it as an opportunity to build on these interests. A group of 70 MBA students and I from �ԹϺ�� had a chance to explore the innovative ways that local organisations are transforming Africa��s business landscape and gaining global recognition.

Innovation, insights and inspiration

Through company visits, panel discussions and interactive sessions, we explored the theme ��How can business address inequality?�� and considered how innovation and entrepreneurship can tackle the challenges facing businesses today.

From tech-enabled Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market innovation to clean technology and transport solutions, the week in Kenya reinforced the importance of sustainable business growth and its positive impact on the local community.

It was a truly eye-opening experience that offered real-world exposure and revealed Africa��s dynamic entrepreneurial landscape. It was an incredible way to broaden perspectives and collaborate through on-ground experience. Not only does it enhance problem-solving skills but also creates meaningful partnerships between academia and industry.

Introducing Spring Valley Coffee

During the trip, we stayed in accommodation above Spring Valley Coffee. Every morning, we would be greeted by the smiling staff and the smells of freshly brewed coffee. Established in 2009 and bought in 2018 by Ritesh Doshi, the company is dedicated to sourcing, roasting and grinding coffee entirely in Kenya, ensuring that the supply chain value remains at its origin to enhance the livelihoods of coffee plantation farmers and communities.

Setting the stage for collaboration

Although we were introduced to Spring Valley Coffee in Nairobi, my collaboration with them started earlier.

Ritesh��s mission aligned with my values, and it was clear how I could use the skills from my studies to support their growth.

A key conversation with Professor Tim Weiss led to a potential Capstone Consulting Experience collaboration, allowing us to contribute to Spring Valley Coffee��s global expansion.

That��s how our partnership with them began �C a natural and exciting decision.

What is the Capstone Consulting Experience?

The Capstone Consulting Experience offers an unparalleled opportunity to collaborate with companies like Spring Valley Coffee.

Bringing together over 100 bright minds from �ԹϺ��ϡ�s MBA programmes, the project challenges students to develop innovative solutions that contribute to a company��s future business strategy.

Taking Spring Valley Coffee global

The challenge: to offer recommendations on how Spring Valley Coffee could expand on a global scale, including planning a successful UK launch.

The solution: in the first instance, we recognised a gap in the UK market. Whilst London, the food and beverage capital of the world, hosts a diverse range of brands, it currently lacks a Kenyan coffee brand.

From there, we mapped out a competitive landscape, conducted field research through consumer surveys and evaluated the economic viability of potential caf�� locations �C ranging from pop-up stores to permanent establishments. This data-driven approach allowed us to develop strategic recommendations focused on brand positioning, marketing and operational efficiencies.

Each of my team members �C Grant Ashby, Zena Dhanak, Dina Antonios, Deniz Kayabas, Hamza Abbasi �C brought diverse perspectives from across the globe, allowing us to create an in-depth and considered study on Spring Valley Coffee��s market entry into the UK.

We emphasised the importance of digital storytelling, innovative brand awareness campaigns and scalable expansion strategies aligned with emerging industry trends.

Our insights provided a roadmap for Spring Valley Coffee to establish a strong foothold in the UK market, driven by purpose and a commitment to excellence.

��During a visit by �ԹϺ�� MBA students to Nairobi in early 2023, an enthusiastic student asked if their group could work on a project for us. Together, we defined the scope and the team did an incredible job diving straight in �C and it really felt like we had our very own team in the UK.

They took time to understand our brand, explore the market opportunities and critically assess the different operating models and possible financial outcomes. Not only did they identify locations, they actually visited them with members of our team, conducted on-the-ground research with customers, landlords and suppliers, and have been a sounding board for me since.

The Capstone Consulting Experience gave us the confidence to enter the UK market. In 2024, we made the decision to open in London and used the materials and learnings �C to this day the presentation serves as the basis of our UK market entry strategy.

And in 2025, we will open our first caf�� in the UK and are excited to bring Kenya��s favourite coffee to London �C and none of it would have been possible without the incredible MBA students that we had the absolute pleasure to work with!��

Beyond the Capstone Consulting Experience

My collaboration with Ritesh has also stretched far beyond the Capstone Consulting Experience.

I continue to speak and work with him on the expansion of his business in London. Engaging with a founder who embodies such passion and dedication to his vision for society is deeply inspiring.

My meetings with him have felt like an extension of my MBA experience and I thoroughly enjoy our idea storming sessions �C whether discussing his insights from his earlier venture of running a successful pizza business in Kenya, selecting the perfect location for the London Spring Valley Coffee caf��, or preparing for the upcoming marathon, which we are both training for to run this October 2025.

Sustainability Fortnight is here! Over two weeks, �ԹϺ�� staff and students can join workshops, events and discussions to inspire action on sustainability. From gardening and fairs to quizzes and swap shops, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

As part of the celebrations, we hear from Kirk, an MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance graduate (Class of 2023). This unique programme, run in collaboration with the Grantham Institute, combines business expertise with climate science and policy to equip future leaders for the green economy. In this blog, Kirk shares his experiences at �ԹϺ��, career support, and sustainability journey - offering insights for aspiring professionals. He also shares how he incorporates sustainability into his daily life.

About me

Growing up around the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA, I developed a love for animals and the outdoors at an early age. As I learned more about climate change and the threats it poses to nature and humans alike, I committed to a career in sustainability to help create a healthier, more resilient and more vibrant world.

Choosing �ԹϺ��ϡ�s MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance programme

In pursuit of this goal, I chose to study the MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance in 2022 to understand how financial systems can catalyse sustainability efforts, and how achieving ambitious environmental goals can yield better business results.

My �ԹϺ�� education was immediately practical, with topical core modules such as ��Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change��, taught by world-renowned scientists and business experts. Complementing what I learned in the classroom is the inspiration and camaraderie I continue to feel from fellow peers: a supportive community of students and alumni fuelled by a shared commitment to a more sustainable world.

My career journey after graduating

When I first stepped foot on the South Kensington campus, I had a million ideas of potential careers swirling in my head. The Careers team was instrumental in helping me narrow my focus and identify job opportunities aligned with my strengths through one-to-one conversations, industry workshops, and employer events such as the Climate Careers Fair.

�ԹϺ�� offers Careers coaching, which increased my confidence to proactively initiate informational interviews and expand my network through LinkedIn. �ԹϺ�� C and particularly?MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance �C alumni are everywhere in the sustainability space. Connecting over a shared academic background quickly helps coffee chats feel conversational, and it was through these discussions with alumni and classmates that I found my job.

Working in sustainability comes with its challenges, including wading through a seemingly constant barrage of pessimistic headlines about missed climate targets and temperature records. Despite this, I find glimmers of optimism in every conversation I have with fellow hardworking sustainability professionals, steadfast in our stalwart effort to make an impact and recognising every success, no matter how small, is a step towards a better world. It��s deeply rewarding when those successes come to fruition and the environment and economy are stronger as a result.

�ԹϺ��'s support

In my experience, the job search requires a concoction of perseverance, grit, and a sprinkling of luck. Thanks to the Careers team��s support and the Business School alumni network, I landed my job at Orbis Advisory, a boutique sustainability consultancy where I��m now a Development Manager. My �ԹϺ�� degree helped my application stand out when I applied, and thanks to introductions made through the Business School alumni network, I landed my role. My?MSc Climate Change, Management & Finance education contributes directly to my work; much of what I learned in ��Carbon Accounting and Reporting�� is practically relevant for my day-to-day tasks of calculating carbon footprints, devising decarbonisation strategies, and assisting clients with regulatory compliance.

My advice to anyone seeking a job in the sustainability sector

I would advise anyone seeking a job in the sustainability sector to realise sustainability can �C and should �C be integrated into any role, not just those that say it in the job title. Many firms�� sustainability teams are becoming less siloed and more interwoven into the fabric of the business; this is an opportunity for students in all fields of study and professionals from any background to contribute to sustainability efforts. Whether you have a PhD in climate science, want to capitalise on investment opportunities, or simply love animals and are interested in helping out, your perspective is needed and has a role to play.

Making sustainability a personal habit

In addition, there are myriad ways to make sustainability a personal habit. I find it useful to ask myself, ��is there a more sustainable way to do this?�� when going about my daily routine to identify small habits, such as sorting my rubbish, as well as larger lifestyle changes, such as reducing meat consumption, that ease the strain on the environment.

The accumulation of these efforts, coupled with systemic changes from businesses and governments, are needed to solve the challenge of climate change. In addition to voting, being a mindful consumer and supporting businesses that commit to ambitious sustainability goals can be an effective way to make your voice heard. There are many resources, such as the Grantham Institute��s Action Hub, that provide useful recommendations from experts on how to make a difference.

Sustainability is a marathon, and addressing the urgency of the climate crisis requires us to sprint. Working together, we can take greater strides towards building a more prosperous world for all.

Having settled into his studies, we caught up with him to hear about his insights from term one �C and if there��s one thing he��s learnt, it��s that this programme is a real game-changer.

The main thing that appealed to me about �ԹϺ��ϡ�s BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science was the quantitative and technical elements of economics combined with the potential that computing and machine learning has in solving economic problems. The focus on this intersection between economics, finance and data science skills is what sets this programme apart from the rest.

My undergraduate expectations vs reality

Programme content - the programme has not only met but far exceeded my expectations. It is tremendously well thought out and organised, with my first term presenting a unique and challenging blend of data science, probability and statistics, key economic issues and mathematics.

The unique combination -?combining economics, finance and data science into one single degree allows you to explore each one in much greater depth than if they were studied siloed from each other. For example, if you wanted to investigate a hypothesis you had about an economic issue, testing that hypothesis empirically against real-world data is a must �C and for that, you need data science skills.?

These subjects naturally cross-fertilise and buttress one another and learning them together makes you a better-rounded graduate and more competitive in each individual field. It is this interdisciplinary approach that aids your understanding and ability to translate your study into practice, which ultimately is the optimum way to learn anything.
?
Workload - university learning is much more independent than at school and college �C it is up to you to manage your time. I would say that, as long as you stay organised, you will be able to balance everything and keep up with the workload. Aim to review lecture notes if needed to cement understanding.??And don��t worry if it takes a little bit of time to get adjusted. The first term moves quickly but stay calm and organised and you won��t fall behind.
?
Moving away from home - before coming to �ԹϺ��, I had always lived in England but never in London �C so moving to the capital for my studies was an exciting change.??Adjusting to London and university life takes a second. You��re now having to balance your workload on top of essentials like food shopping, cooking, cleaning and commuting �C for most of us, this is our first time doing so. However, you will learn to thrive and become a more independent person through the experience.??

I found that the best way to adapt was to find a way of doing things that worked for me. For example, I choose to cycle to �ԹϺ�� instead of taking the tube, which is quicker, cheaper and healthier. And whilst I��ve always enjoyed cooking, I��ve made a lot of progress in this area �C I love trying recipes from scratch that I��ve never made before.

Student life - I have engaged with �ԹϺ��ϡ�s many extracurricular opportunities while here. For example, the Algorithmic Trading Society, which relates very nicely to both data science and finance. I am a regular attendee of Muay Thai and the History Society and took an introductory course in CAD and robotics. Being surrounded by many of the world��s most promising engineers and scientists is an opportunity not to be missed either.

First term learnings

The first term is comprised of four modules, which give you a good foundation for the rest of the degree:

Module 1: Big Issues in Economics and Finance - this module does exactly what it says on the tin. Each lecture focuses on a key contemporary issue in economics and finance. The key economic models are explained rigorously, and it also focuses on recent developments and how these issues are relevant to today.

Module 2: Probability and Statistics �C here you will learn an array of necessary skills, from probability theory to statistics.
?
Module 3: Introduction to Data Science - this module introduces programming in R and teaches various data science concepts with a very practical approach.
?
Module 4: Mathematical Foundations - this focuses on logic, set theory, real analysis, vector spaces and linear algebra and multivariable calculus. It��s fast paced and is particularly innovative as it uses generative AI to produce plots to visualise concepts.

My academic growth so far

My understanding of economics, finance and data science has already evolved hugely over the first term. We have covered a huge array of economic and financial issues, from the potential outcomes framework in random controlled trials to a fascinating guest lecture by Professor Jonathon Haskel on the importance of expectations in combatting inflation.

I have developed a greater understanding of the holistic process of data analysis, from the initial exploration of datasets all the way through to presenting our findings.

The programme does a great job of developing your understanding of the different subjects in tandem with one another, allowing for a cross-fertilisation of skills that will be invaluable in the future.?

Looking to the future?

Considering my career

I��ve always been more of a tech person, and getting some hands-on experience with datasets over my first term has cemented this for me and helped to strengthen my career aspirations.

I am particularly looking forward to developing my theoretical knowledge of AI and machine learning �C I really look forward to gaining the mathematical basis needed for a future career in this area.

But no matter your desired field in the group of economics, finance and data science, the programme will keep you sustained and interested throughout the degree. It does a very good job of developing skills in multiple areas, allowing you a chance to find out where your passions lie and giving you all the tools you need to pursue your chosen career path.

In the first instance, the Careers team is a great source of support. They have bookable one-to-one meetings, which are invaluable if you intend to apply to a Spring Week or Insights Programme.

They have supported me with CV advice, and on how to write cover letters. You can book as many meetings as you like and the support given is personalised, fair and, most importantly, useful.

On top of this, the close-knit communication between staff and students is great �C they really are on your side and look out for you. Our Head of Year has supported me on multiple occasions and the lecturers work hard to answer your questions and push you to achieve your full potential. ?

About me

Prior to joining the programme, I worked in advertising agencies for six years in Hong Kong, providing marketing consultations and executing advertising campaigns.

My goal after graduation is to work in social impact and sustainability consulting roles, where I can utilise my expertise in a more impactful sector. I chose to study at �ԹϺ�� Business School because of its reputation and its comprehensive and up-to-date programmes. For example, I am able to learn more about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in different modules, which may not be available at other schools yet. Let me share insights into the modules I've chosen for this term at �ԹϺ��!

My first impressions of �ԹϺ�� Business School

In terms of the MBA students and alumni I have encountered so far, my first impression was overwhelmingly positive.

The MBA cohort is not only culturally diverse but also incredibly friendly. We bonded closely during the two weeks before the start of the school year, engaging in team-building activities and treating each other as family members.

The support and love from the alumni community are also remarkable. Many alumni return to the business school to share their MBA journey and work experiences, and my mentor went the extra mile to welcome me to �ԹϺ�� and give me a tour of the campus, which was heart-warming.

The modules I��ve chosen and why

This term, I've enrolled in six modules, including two compulsory ones: Marketing Management and Business Problem Solving. Additionally, I've opted for Design Thinking, Sustainability and Competitive Advantage, Data Analytics and Visualisation for Business, and Managing Negotiations as my elective modules. Let's dive deeper into a couple of these courses to provide a glimpse of my learning experience:

Data Analytics and Visualisation for Business

In this module, Professor Xiaocheng Li provided us an overview of various methods for handling, analysing, and visualising data. We acquired basic knowledge of tools such as Python, SQL, and Tableau. We also explored the application of AI tools in data analysis and gained an understanding of their strengths and limitations. An interesting fact we discovered was that if we ask GPT4 to perform calculations without using Python code, it fails to provide accurate answers. Throughout the programme, we had the opportunity to work on assignments using real-life data, where we tried building predictive models to solve business problems.

Design Thinking: Solving Complex Problems Through a Disruptive Mindset

In this module, we embarked on a 2.5-month journey exploring the design thinking methodology and process with Professor Ileana Stigliani. We began by defining the problem and conducting user research, followed by collecting and clustering inputs to gain key insights. Using these insights, we engaged in an idea generation process to generate numerous ideas, and then selected a few for testing and feedback. At the end of the module, we were required to present our process and final product to a panel consisting of professionals from creative agency. Throughout the journey, we were provided with tools and frameworks to guide us at every step. Our team focused on the challenge of helping students land jobs more effectively, which involved interviewing students, career consultants, and recruiters to understand their pain points. We then developed prototypes to test and refine our ideas, and finally proposing a AI-powered platform that consolidate various tools and platform together as a final product. It was a comprehensive and enriching experience that allowed us to apply design thinking principles in a practical context.

Business Problem Solving

In this module, Dr. Ian Mackenzie provided us with valuable insights into business problem solving and consulting. With his extensive practical experience, he presented us with various real-life business cases, guiding us on how to break down and address complex problems. These cases included topics such as organisational restructuring, innovation transformation, and even effective interview techniques. The sessions were highly interactive with active participation from our cohort, allowing us to learn from one another and gain different perspectives on how to approach the cases. To conclude the module, we will be working in groups to write a proposal based on a case study, applying the knowledge and skills we acquired throughout the sessions.

My favourite memory of the programme so far

While working with my classmates on various school projects and perfecting our group presentations has been a rewarding experience, my best memory as an MBA student thus far is the getaway we had with my cohort in October. We embarked on a hike to Sevens Sisters Cliff, and it was an incredible bonding experience. The hike presented its challenges, but we supported and encouraged each other throughout the journey, allowing us to enjoy the breathtaking views of the cliffs along the way.?

My advice to candidates considering applying to �ԹϺ�� Business School

Be authentic both to yourself and to the admissions panel. Take the time to deeply understand yourself and your long-term career aspirations. This self-reflection will help you craft a compelling narrative that genuinely conveys your story to the admissions panel.

I embarked on the Weekend MBA journey to deepen my understanding of key business concepts and strategies, particularly in operations, strategy, financial management, and leadership. This decision stemmed from my pivotal role in leading a sell-side transaction for a hospital in Nigeria positioning it for future growth, which highlighted the need for advanced business knowledge. ?

Throughout the programme, I've applied theoretical concepts and strategic frameworks learned in the classroom to my professional role, particularly in project management, financial analysis, and strategic planning. For instance, in a technology project, I integrated project management agile methodology with design thinking concepts, fostering a dynamic and innovative approach to problem-solving and project execution. This fusion not only streamlined tasks but also significantly enhanced the efficiency of project delivery, ultimately leading to improved project outcomes.?

Challenges I faced along the way?

Navigating the rigorous academic curriculum alongside professional responsibilities has been challenging at times, requiring resilience and perseverance. However, overcoming these challenges has been incredibly rewarding, as each milestone and accomplishment brings me closer to achieving my academic and career aspirations. The opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios and collaborate with talented peers has been particularly fulfilling in addition to building and expanding my network.?
